"Better Call Saul" recap: He wasn't always Saul Goodman, ace attorney for chemist-turned-meth dealer Walter White. Six years before he begins to represent Albuquerque's most notorious criminal, Goodman is Jimmy McGill, a small-time attorney hustling to make a name for himself. He's a forceful champion for his low-income clients, an underdog whose morals and ambitions often clash. Jimmy works with private eye Mike Ehrmantraut, a former Philadelphia cop and recent transplant to the Southwest. Mike has a specialized skill set -- he's a "fixer" of sticky situations -- that Jimmy soon learns to appreciate.

I love when an older seasoned actor gets their time to shine. He did so good in this role it’s insane. Complete suspension of disbelief in every scene he’s in. This clinches it, he’s my favorite character in this universe.

The failure to give Jonathan Banks an emmy during those 2 shows is a disgrace.

Mike being a Vietnam vet holds his character together so well in both breaking bad and better call saul, the man has serious skills in deception and weapon handling which feeds his ability to perform crime and punishment in equal measure while under pressure, truly one of the best written characters in a TV show for a very long time.

Too bad Mike underestimated Walter, but he was right that Saul shouldn't have gotten involved with him.

22:20 Mike getting shot there is massive for the story. It’s what makes him seek out an underground doctor to tend to him in Albuquerque, introducing him to the vet and the underworld.

As someone who lives in philly, i can confirm it has a blue tint to it. Better than the yellow tint of mexico i suppose.

I really love how all of Mike's plans actually make sense. Especially the shoes one as you realize why he's firing shots.

Mike out there playing checkers while everyone else doesn't even know they're in the game

"We were just supposed to scare you, that's all" "Well try harder next time"

Everything about the 'red shoe scene' was perfect, the build up (getting the bag of drugs) the false 'hunter' shots, the camera work from above as it spilled out, and the long tracking shot at the border......sublime!!
  • I like how these are all him using silly, random items to his advantage or playing dumb

You should’ve included the phone call Mike makes to the cops before he hits tucos car. It just helps show how much he planned it out

The first scene alone demonstrates just how patient and careful he is in the execution of his plans. He had no interest in shooting Hector’s men, but also didn’t want them to be too alerted when he fired off his rifle at the shoe with cocaine inside. He had to fire off enough shots to have them let their guard down by the time he got the cocaine to sprinkle onto the truck. Quite the expert at reconnaissance and planning.

My fiancial situation: If Tuco saw my bank account he would have given me the 400 $
  • @83fleafan
Mike is one of the most badass and dangerously intelligent characters devised by modern writers!
  • @bmo7454
Gotta love how even someone as batshi* at Tuco still has high respect for his elders

4:33 they must be thinking ‘shit, they take littering around here serious’ 😂

I love how in the second clip he's listening to the game on the radio while staking out the house.

Gus needs a spin-off but a spin-off of a younger version of Mike is what we really need. AMC make it happen! 💯
