The state of Israel is in political turmoil as it marks its 75th anniversary. While there is still no end in sight to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, Israeli society itself is more divided than ever before.

The founding of the Jewish state was a dream come true for Jews around the world. It came just a few years after the genocide of the Holocaust and 2,000 years after the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple and the exile from Israel.

On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion read out the Israeli Declaration of Independence in a small building in the center of Tel Aviv. Ever since its foundation, Israel has had a checkered history. As well as ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, it has seen poverty and hardship, but also economic prosperity and social advances over the past 75 years. In addition, Israel enjoys political and military superiority in the region. At the same time, the state is now going through its deepest-ever domestic crisis. Israel is socially, politically and religiously polarized.

One reason for that are the plans put forward by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing religiously conservative government. The reforms are designed to reduce the power of the Supreme Court. Critics regard the move as an assault on democracy and an attempt to undermine the independence of the judiciary. For months now, hundreds of thousands of Israelis have been protesting against the proposals.

In his documentary, ZDF correspondent Michael Bewerunge investigates what has become of the aspirations of the nation’s founders and how people today are living the Jewish dream.

Imagine someone breaking into your home and telling you that they used to live here 2000 years ago and that’s why you have to leave now. It’s a crime.

As a Native American it sickens me to see colonialism occurring like this, all in the name of religion…
  • The audacity of that woman, Daniella. How hypocritical she is, settling on a land that does not belong to her and saying that they are peaceful. I mean...
  • @micah4242
As a Jewish person, I am revolted that people with such a long history of religious and ethnic persecution would persecute others on the same basis.
  • Wow Just wow!! The sheer audacity to say that people will never have sovereignty and will be kicked out of their homes where they lived for generations while absolutely glorifying the settlers, just INSANE!!
  • @shariyarshajid
The settler lady in the Occupied West Bank telling about Peace whereas she lives in an illegal land is so insane.

"The dream of the oppressed is to be the oppressor". This is an endless cycle
  • @RidvanMaloku
This woman's audacity to take people's land and property and tell them that they will never have sovereignty is insane.

That one American dude I saw in a clip talking with a Palestinian family being displaced who had the confident audacity to tell them "If I don't take it, someone else will" told me everything I needed to know about the Israeli government. They've deliberately fostered an aura of privilege based on being a member of the Jewish religion to the point where people don't even bat an eye and are completely out in the open over outright genocidal type behaviors. It's been going on so long that it's on open secret and totally ingrained in the psyches of the ones who feel that way regardless of the country they're living in.

The woman claiming that they do no harm, really lady? How would you call taking someone else’s home then?
  • @aliabdul3914
The Settlers are just called "settlers attack" while they were trying to cause death to Palestinians by throwing objects at the Palestinian cars. And the Palestinians called "Terrorist attack"
  • @sadiaafroz2094
Her statement proves how peace loving she is! She sounds very revengeful and ungrateful.

This whole «we’re god’s chosen people» and sense of entitlement is very narcissistic, what a sad personality traits to pass on … complete absence of empathy there.
  • @Washilly
Who's here after the Palestinian attack?
  • @ronanparker8783
We never hear about the conflict in the media. When we do Palestinians are labelled as ‘terrorists’. The definition of apartheid is “Apartheid refers to the implementation and maintenance of a system of legalized racial segregation in which one racial group is deprived of political and civil rights. Apartheid is a crime against humanity punishable under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.” Am I missing something or is this the most unjust, morally wrong in every sense and a literally form of modern day colonialism ever ?

Throwing anybody out of their home is wrong, no matter what way you look at it

Always wanted to visit there, but seeing how things are in Israel/Palestine, I changed my mind. There’s way too much conflict there for me to feel safe taking my family. The situation is really sad too given that it’s supposed to be the holy land, the land of “milk and honey”. It seems like the land of nightmares to me.
