Use Discord? Hate it? Recently moved away from it? We want to hear about your Discord relationship below!
  • @barbyboi
The biggest problem is: Theres no real "easy" alternative, and almost nobody reads the tos :(
  • I just can't catch a break. Whether it's Gmail or Discord, my information will always be taken away. I almost hate caring about my privacy since it interferes with so much, but I know that's exactly what companies like Discord want.
  • @warhawk_yt
I knew discord wasnā€™t good for privacy/security but I didnā€™t know it was this bad damn. Unfortunately all my friends are on there which makes it difficult to get off of it completely but I have started using matrix recently. As of right now I agree it isnā€™t a full discord alternative but with the introduction of spaces it makes it a little closer to discord.
  • @asishreddy7729
Thanks for actually including good alternatives and not just leave it at just talking about problems in discord
  • @Chloe-ju7jp
Discord needs to be sued into the ground for that gdpr thing
  • @toddisgodd9119
The difficult part of getting away from discord is convincing your heavily misinformed friends about itā€™s flaws
  • For anyone watching in 2024, revolt chat is a really nice developing open-source alternative to discord. No mobile apps yet, but the interface is just like discord, you've got text channels, roles, a few bots (including Remix for music), and they have voice chats too.

This is basically like a facebook situation: I need to use discord because all of my friends are on there, yadda yadda. I started using flatpak as soon as I realized discord collected data on which programs I opened no matter what my settings were. And I'm super frustrated at the lack of a proper mobile pwa. Even with lack of third party.
  • @ikec-pw5sb
Since when did Youtube care so much about my privacy that they reccomended this video to me? Seriously, thank you. Worst part is, I've just installed Discord onto desktop the other day, too!
  • @GilesFAhrun
It'll be difficult for people to leave Discord. Most of those users are gamers/ropleplayers/streamers who aren't going to leave the 'game centric' appeal Discord have for another IM. Not even Element or IRC sadly. EDIT March 13 2022: Now that Discord is being even more of an rearhole with the new rules, I guess people are moving towards Guilded. I don't think it'll be better than Discord when it comes to privacy but... It's a new option (along with Revolt Chat in which is an open source messenger but it's on alpha). And it makes me wonder when VALVe will make a IM like these. EDIT May 5 2023: Revolt Chat seems to be a good replacement, altough some complains it's not federated.

As someone with no real friends and 1 discord contact I've been trying to find a reason to get off it, guess now's that time. Who cares if my account gets banned! Lol Signal here I come
  • @smugmode
I didn't know the chats were unencrypted lmao wtf
  • @sammercia
I wanted this video! Discord doesn't care about privacy at all. I use an extension to purge all my old messages.
  • @Skiltra
discord was one of the few thing were I read terms of service and privacy as I've probably used it more than I've used a phone. Still I didn't know literally everything was logged that you do
  • @Galaxia53
That people literally have forgotten what privacy is seems dystopian
  • @ransacked
I hate discord with a passion. I'm so glad I dont use that trash.
  • @elvisbeststuff
I used Discord for about a year, then switched to Signal shortly after seeing this video. I requested my data from the settings page on Discord, just for the heck of it and I can see every message I've sent and what servers I've been on. I can even see my friends list and get a full copy of the photo I uploaded for my avatar. Good God Discord! I'm disgusted! :(
  • @leriku2270
I like discord, it's convenient, but shit like this makes me hate it as well. And all my friends use discord so switching will be hard.
