Dr. Malcolm Betruger is likely one of the most interesting characters in the Doom series. He worked hard for a company that undervalued him, and in response, he took it upon himself to find a different way to learn about Hell. Even if it came at the cost of the human population of Mars City.

Although regarded as the villain of Doom 3, and the expansion, Resurrection of Evil, Betruger, or the Maledict was also a victim of a system that did not value his creative vision. What pushed Dr. Malcolm Betruger to betray his species? How did he become The Maledict in The Resurrection of Evil? and how does his story end? In this video, I explore the lore and story behind Dr. Malcolm Betruger in Doom.

Who is the best Doom villain? To win this game you must like and subscribe.
  • @artemonstrick
A guy experiments with literal hell and his name translation from german is literally TRAITOR. Everyone else in the corporation: proceed with everything you do, good sir.
  • I still remember my shock by seeing Betruger's head cone out from the Madelic's mouth. Was so cool and creepy. I'm glad we get to take both out in Resurrection of Evil.

Doom 3's lore have one of the most dark, mysterious and atmospheric vibe in the entire series. I'm glad you haven't forgotten about this now underrated part of the franchise, keep it up!

Saying that Doom 3 is not a Doom game is like saying Mario Galaxy is not a Mario game. It is a nice change of pace for the series and is a well made spooky game. A missed opportunity though to add Crash into the DLC, instead of another random nameless Marine.

I honestly remember DOOM 3 more fondly than DOOM 2016. 2016 had a sound track that absolutely slapped, but the atmosphere that DOOM 3 brought made it feel like a game about fighting hell more than the others did.
  • The weird thing about the main villains of Doom 3 and 4 is that they should have been swapped. Betruger's cartoonish propensity for maniacal laughter and grandiose taunts fit the campy nature of the Doomslayer games, while Olivia Pierce's reserved demeanor and tragic nature as a manipulated pawn would gave fit 3's serious horror focus.
  • Doom 3’s flashlight mechanic is severely underrated. It really tied the game up as a horror game. I loved every second playing through this game. So much fun.

Doom 3 has the best story out of all the Doom games. Truly underrated gem. I wish they would make a proper sequel set in the Doom 3 universe.
  • @zachary7573
They should have used this storyline for the Doom movie. It would’ve been way cooler than the ridiculous bio engineered demons we got instead.

The Rip and Tear was still there, you just had to be a beast about it and it came suddenly. Even thought it was slower paced you still had to tear the room apart pretty regularly. A thing I always say when people talk about how dark the game was is "the plasma gun lit up the room just fine".

Doom3 is one of games that need remaster and it doesn't need much work, just some optimization for modern systems and remake of character models as map design, lighting and story is one of best you can get. Just like Return to Castle Wolfenstain and STALKER, Doom3 is game that you can play every year and still get lots of fun as those games have amazing atmosphere and characters like Dr Betruger
  • @pRopaaNS
You forgot to mention Betruger's geat sense of humor. His oneliners and laughs carries the Doom 3 playthrough!
  • Dr. Betruger is definitely not only my favorite Doom villain but my favorite video game villain. He’s basically demonic Emperor Palpatine. He doesn’t have some sympathetic backstory or any complex motivation, he’s just evil and revels in being evil. And he’s enough of a threat and has enough of a presence to still be intimidating as much as he’s entertaining.

There is a fan theory that the ancient Martians in Doom 3 were possibly an offworld branch of the Sentinels from Doom 2016, aka the Bethian tribe of Hebeth or another tribe like them. That among the worlds the Sentinels colonized in the early days included the universe of Doom 3 Mars, since their slipstream tech seems similar to teleportation. So based on teleportation allowing travel between dimensions in the Doom games, the ancient Martians of Doom 3 were from Argent D'Nur. It would even make sense that Doomguy used the Soul Cube when he was still a Sentinel. But he didn't die, but was trapped in Hell. But the Agrent D'Nur Martian survivors didn't know this so they created a tomb to honor him, even if it was empty before they escape to Doom 3 Earth and possibly other planets, dimensions or back to Argent D'Nur.

I had not realised how similar the doom 2 universe and the half-life universes were
  • @HQ_Default
I wish we saw more remnants of what Betruger was like prior to the whole demon pact. It would have been cool to pick up a PDA with emails from him that clearly show him acting differently before and after he went nuts.
  • @Diazepamo
DOOM³ is one of my favourite games, I didn't like it that much when it was released because it was much different than I expected, but I grew really fond of it and now I play through it once a year. Mostly in the christmas holidays.

Doom 3 was amazing. I rember finding a Coop mod back in the day that let you play it with up to 3 other people. Was so ground breaking at the time.
  • @spookzie4208
Picked this up when it came out and loved it. The story was pretty interestering, i liked the emails and datapads the told mini stories about the personell living at the station. Actually got quite a bit of replayability out of it, the co-op being one of the main reasons. Wasnt too big on the multiplayer though. When the scientist comes flailing out of the portal with the hellknight following close was such a cool scene.
