Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. Together they make up the Seven Deadly Sins. But where do they come from, what are there origins?

In this video, we'll explore the origin and history of the Seven Deadly Sins ( sometimes also known as the Seven Cardinal Sins or Vices), as well as the concept of sin at large. You may be surprise to learn that they do not come from the Bible - well, not as a strict list as we now have it. They may have come from an Egyptian monk, known as Evagrius of Pontus and taken up by Pope Gregory I. But they certainly gained traction after Dante's Divine Comedy, notably Inferno and Purgatorio.

I really hope you enjoy watching this video. with another algorithm spike, things have been really stirring on the channel lately, so welcome all new subscribers. We're at 149k now, absurd! Thank you all for your kind comments :)

First time hearing about the Cardinal Virtues. I guess my catholic school was too focused on the seven sins
  • I'd like to see writers basing characters on the 7 virtues instead of the 7 deadly sins now

Gluttony being a deadly sin always threw me off because it just never seemed AS bad as the others lol
  • So I’m not religious, but I enjoy learning about this stuff, it’s like reading stories about Greek or Norse mythology, and it’s so cool to see the effect on culture that different stories and beliefs have!

2:10 Iroh from The Last Airbender: “Pride is not the opposite of shame, but it's source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.” P.S. I think that Nikola was an expert in all of the Cardinal Virtues.

Anime fun fact: Purgatory translate "Rengoku" in Japanese. In Demon slayer, The strongest flame breathing is 9th form: Purgatory or "Rengoku" used by the Rengoku family

Growing up as a Catholic, your topics truly facinate me! Don't get me wrong, I also love the other topics you cover. Not just the biblical/religious ones. Thank you for existing!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS CHANNEL. This is what all churches should be like. Educational, in-depth, with no guilt or forcing a belief, rather just a beautiful analogy into certain themes in The Bible.

I cannot express how much I love your channel – it’s literally my favorite channel on YouTube

If sadness was combined into sloth, is sloth actually referring to lethargy and not just selfish laziness?
  • @Walkman3333
"The 7 Deadly Sins can be seen in books, television, etc." Don't even get started on how much it has affected the most sinful medium: anime.

Your channel is a constant source of interesting/fascinating information. Thanks ever so much for all your efforts.

Actually, the counterparts to the 7 deadly sins are the 7 Lively Virtues. The Cardinal Virtues are Justice, Prudence, Temperance, and Fortitude.
