When Social Media Doctors Get Mixed Up With NFTs

The perils of being a medical influencer... I'm not saying this is an NFT scam. But the pre-test probability is high. With the added bonus of being an antivax fundraiser...oh dear.

I can't actually recall how I found this, I just stumbled on it on twitter and had no idea what I was watching. The videos at the time had about 100 views each, the first one has now ticked past 180k views. One MIGHT suggest that I had secretly invested in these NFTs and I've just given them free publicity...muahaha. Well not really, as they're not on sale yet. Plus I'm not that smart anyway.

I hope it's evident that I am not seeking drama and am working on the assumption that most/all of these medfluencers didn't get the full story, but I'd probably recommend others give NFTs a wide berth. Wanting to raise money for charity is a noble goal, but there are ways to do it without all this scammy overlay. NFT minting is ultimately a way of raising money from gullible people who receive very little in exchange. If the goal is delivering healthcare to remote areas, again the web3 angle seems unnecessary.

Just another weird and wonderful way that healthcare is being treated like a commodity, to be “accessed” by first world people who can afford it, and charity cases. Hurray.

Honey wake up, new shady NFT scam just dropped!
  • @WallebyDamned
"It's charitable to autism!" This sentence just made every part of my gut clench. Oh, and there you go, it's for a group wanting to treat me as a problem needing a final solution 😬

How to ruin your credibility as a doctor in one three-letter acronym
  • @footballmint
That "wow, it's charitable to autism!" line is hilarious. Maybe they figured out how to give money to a neurological condition through the power of the block chain!
  • @sandwich2473
Holy hell, I assumed that their "autism charity" was going to be something bad, but oh my goodness TACA is much worse than I ever expected

Seriously thought this was satire and was impressed that Dr. Medlife had been able to enlist so many friends to goof on themselves. Heartbroken that's it's real.

I don't want a famous doctor. I want one that's going to make me stop hurting and worrying and dying earlier than I had planned.
  • I immediately knew that the autism charity they were partnering with would be shady when they said 'donating to help autism', cause, like, unless you're donating to somewhere that helps provide access to support for autistic people (those kinds of charities are usually extremely small and local btw), how tf do you 'help autism'. And usually groups that think we all need the same kind of 'help' are those who think we really need to be cured, soooooooo yeah, not at all surprised they partnered with the underdog version of autism speaks.

I cant wait until they drop the disease and disorders NFT's. I've really been wanted to own "rectal prolapse" on the block chain.

Dr Francis getting caught up calling out other vloggers is the most influencer thing I never thought I'd see him do this year 💀
  • @TheRacePig
Maybe I'm horrible but I absolutely cracked up when the bald guy said "WOW! It's charitable to autism!" Just the way he says it, the look on his face, who on earth thought this was a good idea.
  • Saying no to NFTs and yes to LFTs is the best advice i can give to impulsive alcoholic friends

"It's charitable to autism!" I don't know exactly why, but that neatly bundles up a lot of red flags into one easy package.

1:33 "Metadocs is an NFT project working to revolutionize health care and charitable giving" It's like a line straight out of the tv show Silicon Valley
  • As an autistic person, that "Wow! It is charitable for autism!" makes me angry, on two levels: 1) we don't need charities but real help (for adults too!!!) that makes everyday life in a world designed for neurotypicals easier, and 2) for grammatical reasons.

Every profession now is jumping into nft. I thought that doctors would never do this. Imagine if Lawyers are promoting nfts , so they can give you a Legal advice in Metaverse.

    I have a general rule: if it looks like a SCAM there’s a 99% chance IT’S A SCAM

On the other side of this are science channels that do not even monetize their channel to avoid conflicts of interests. In return they get crushed by the algorithm. yay!
