This drone is faster than an F1 car.

Red Bull recently raced a Formula 1 car against a drone - and it wasn’t just in a straight line, it was around the Silverstone circuit - one of the fastest tracks, with the fastest corners on F1’s calendar.

It’s a circuit where Formula 1 cars are very much at home, a track where they’re 42 seconds a lap faster than a McLaren Senna.

But, in this race, the drone was WAY faster.

Reality catches up with Gran Turismo's replay chase cam. Rain makes airflow pretty.

I remember seeing that. It's pretty cool. Maybe one day we will see live race broadcast using this view!

I watched this redbull video when they released it and It was the most fascinating thing. Max's reaction about the perspective were right on point. It would be such a great angle to add to the viewership when watching an F1 race.

The only thing faster than a Dutch person is another Dutch person. 😎

The distance isn't a factor in the delay. It takes 3us for light (which includes radio waves) to travel 1km. The signal could make the trip 10,000 times in 30ms. It's the onboard video processing, the network stack on the drone, the relay, and the client, and the client side video processing that take 30ms.

I work at a drag strip. There is only one type of car on the planet that out accelerate an FPV drone. Those are Rocket powered Dragsters. Not even Top Fuel can out accelerate an FPV drone. Top Fuel can run the 1/8th in 3 sec. A fast FPV racing drone can do it in 2.3 sec after another second has gone by it is already at the 1/4mile finish and on it's way back.

They used a drone with a transmitter relay... THATS SO COOL. Was wondering how they got signal across the track

All these racing drones are kind of a challenge. What most people don't understand is how different this is to fly than a regular "camera drone". 100% manual control, you have to build and TUNE it, and then race it! Only to crash, rebuild and try again. The tuning alone is a pretty hard process to understand for anybody not familliar with PID algorythms. I've been in this hobby since 2016, and even though i have it on pause for the last 3 years, this video made me so happy because I know how hard this was to achieve!

This drone must be part of F1 broadcasting, I remember they used a drone in Spanish GP 2022. That was awful lol

This is why I drone race 😊 Great video by the way, slight correction on the typical racing drone. A racing drone is typically somewhere around about 275g without the battery and 550g with a battery. The one featured is a DRL quad which was purposely designed to be heavier and slower to make for better racing for spectators 😊

Interesting as always, Scott. Thank you for sharing 🌞

This is fascinating- there were so many factors covered in this vid that I would not otherwise have been aware of or considered. I really enjoy the vids that focus on the kind of bleeding-edge engineering that is found only in spaces like racing and aerospace (and military and pure science experimentation etc). Cheers!
  • @andrefrm
Wow, this is the best video on this drone! Really gave me a genuine appreciation for just how tough of a technical challenge this drone overcame. Thank you so much. RedBull should've just hired you to make this video. Honestly.
  • @Invid72
Cool video. Two of my favourite hobbies...F1 and FPV drones!
  • Having these guys filming actual F1 race or qualification would be brilliant. Hope battery development improves significantly.
  • @MC---
Scott, are you going to have a video about your trip to Utah and participating in the Off Road Games with MORR?
  • @Raziel1984
the images flying behind max and david are so cool
