Cleaning Electronic Controls

A quick video on cleaning electronic controls, especially switches and potentiometers (variable resistors). Note that it is possible for potentiometers and switches to wear out, although this takes a very long time or a lot of hard use before it happens. Getting the cover off and getting into the controls is probably the hardest part of this whole process.

This video is not likely to be helpful if you have a device that uses microswitches to adjust functions. These little switches can wear out and usually have to be replaced, although they can be cleaned if you are very careful when opening them.

Extremely informative and concise. No mumbling or wasted time. You deserve a How-To TV show. Pro all the way. Thank you!

Wow 294k views and i cannot believe how many will look at good info and too lazy to hit the like button. Thank you Sir for going over this.. some 12 years ago. My receiver just started crackling when i turn on/off the A and B speakers to enjoy some headphone time. Now it's time to get some cleaner.

I just picked up a Pioneer SX-3700 from my local antique shop for $20. Plugged it in, hooked up some cheap speakers, loud crackling noises even when volume is all the way down. The first thing that came to my mind was "uxwbill must have a video on dirty controls..." and I was right. Once I can track down some contact cleaner, i'll give it a try! Thank you for the video!

Great video mate! Thanks a lot! I love your presentation. It's like you are a living audio-book version of an old-school manual, I love it!

picked up an old Pioneer SX 1000 TW for $2.00 in 2004 took it home and powered it up and it had 3 burnt bayonet bulbs and scratchy controls...replaced bulbs and cleaned with Radio Shacks contact cleaner and it  worked like a champ...still have it today
  • I have a Yamaha C4 Control amp that was always had static or the issue that you describe in your video. I have had this problem for over 15 years, the unit was purchased in 1977. I tried your suggestion and it worked perfectly! Luckily access to the switches and controls was only a few screw away. thanks for your video it was a great help.
  • Hi- Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I followed your directions and got my $10 estate sale Philips 7961 receiver working perfectly.

I enjoyed the simplicity/clarity of this video Bill. Good job! I just shared it on my Facebook Vintage Hi-Fi and Stereo Equipment group and also on my Classic HiFi Repair Parts and Information group. Thanks, Rob

Hey man. Really wanted to thank you. I bought some contact cleaner and it fixed my dad’s old stereo receiver. Sounds great now! Big thanks!
  • @illegal_op
Thanks for saving me some money Bill! Bought a can for use on a kinda unique 1972 Bradford radio I got at a sale for $1. Works like a charm now.

Thank you for the video. Wish I had watched it earlier. I may have used my Deoxit D5 a bit too generously however, I am now just waiting patiently for it to dry out. I certainly hope that this solves the problem I'm having with my Pioneer SX-850. Thanks again!
  • @Maxxarcade
Thanks for doing a great explanation on this. I never have the patience to go into this much detail about stuff. Now I can send all the people who ask me about cleaning controls over to this video :-)

Thanks for the tip on the anti-corrosive lubricant spray from RS, I have a nearly 40 year old harman kardon 730 that sounds beautiful after half an hour's worth of work last weekend.
  • Hey Bill, I have a pioneer sx-626 that has a scratchy volume control. also, only one of the speakers works until a certain volume is reached, the second one kicks in. what do you think the issue could be?
