Jeff and Sarah visited Fort Humboldt earlier this year to see where future President Ulysses S. Grant spent a miserable winter and spring of 1854.
He arrived in January 1854 separated from family and he loathed the place and felt like his service was wasted. Grant began to drink and left the Army because of it. He went on to greatness during the Civil War.

Fort Humboldt! My wife and I lived in Eureka for a year. Our oldest son was born there. Visited Fort Humboldt many times, you could have the whole place to yourself on weekdays in the winter. Great place to walk, clear your mind and think of what once was. Enjoyed your episode very much

I had no idea Grant was in Humboldt County. I can understand why he felt that way. He may have felt like the Military abandoned him at this point. He sure over came his demons and depression! I guess Grant was wrong on the Indians of Humboldt. Thus proving the daily drills and military discipline was vital to ensure survival then as it is today. Iโ€™m sure he exceeded all of his fatherโ€™s expectations. Proving one can overcome depression and addiction to go on to do great things. Merry Christmas Jeff and Sarah!

My high school American government teacher claimed that he wasn't a true alcoholic, but poorly tolerated any amount of alcohol, & his staff would make sure that he only had shot-glass sizes to drink from.---I completely understand your ghosts of the past comment. I've had powerful experiences myself, in many different locations...Bandelier National Monument outside Los Alamos, the USS Arizona, the Kiev Memorial. History seemed so alive there.

So happy you did not miss Fort Humboldt. After my visit I bought a Grant Biography to learn more. Also learned a lot about the abuse and murder of Native Americans in the Eureka area. As always love your channel.

Interesting story of Grant. I didn't know he had been kicked out of the army prior to the Civil War. He just wasn't cut out for an isolated post. Sad what the settlers did to the Native Americans after he was gone. Wishing you and Sarah a very merry Christmas.

Strange how circumstances present themselves; had it not been for Grant's sordid past, he would never have risen to the lofty height of the presidency. Shunned by an indifferent wife with questionable intentions, Grant suffered from severe alcoholism and unfathomable bouts of depression. I was fascinated by your account of this misunderstood icon, Jeff.

WOW, I had no idea about the personal side of Grant's life. This was very eye-opening, and pretty sad. Thanks, Jeff and Sarah for this video.
