I use dowels as my primary joinery method. Having a high end doweling jig like the dowelmax or jessem greatly enhance the speed and accuracy. I prefer the dowelmax; amazingly well built jig, extremely accurate and almost dummy proof. It removes pretty much all negative aspects of dowel joinery. I do use pocket screws in conjunction with dowels sometimes; that eliminates the movement with pocket screws. I'd love a domino, but honestly, my dowelmax has been working so well for me that I've held off. That's a one day tool for me. Biscuit joiners should be the dodos of tools; the only difference being dodos are more useful and shouldn't be extinct. Unlike biscuit joiners. XD Seriously, I used to have a biscuit joiner (PC 557) and it's easily the worst tool purchase I ever made. I sold it many years ago and it felt like I was exorcising a demon. edit: Caleb, you're not supposed to move the domino width selector when the tool is off...

Best part of the video was the intro, I am having a coffee emergency. Love it and those who know you know it is true.
  • Exactly why I bought a Domino. I'm not a professional but wanted to go through projects faster and with more precision. Every time I get this tool out it justifies it's price no question. But people have to understand there still is a learning curve, especially for complex angles. But once you get funky joints figured out I don't think there's a better tool out there. No buyers remorse on this one. Like he said though: if you dont have the money to spare and/or you actually want to spend more time fine tuning a joint etc than this tool is definatly not necessary.

Thanks Caleb. I appreciate these tips and information. I am a dowel/pocket screw kind of guy. I don't need a domino often enough to spend the money.
  • Good technical thoughts for joinery. Letting the novice to the pro on how to join items. Thanks Caleb.

I would love to have a domino Jig. I just don't think my work warrants getting one yet.

I recently got the Grizzly power dowel jig for a project and hope that speeds things up. The domino would be nice but I can’t justify it as a hobbyist. Also, one critique, and I sincerely don’t mean this as a troll. I enjoy watching your videos and I am subscribed but I wish you would do a bit more on the editing side and eliminate the outtakes. I don’t know if it is intentional but since as a viewer I can’t tell if it is intentional it should probably be cleaned up some. Otherwise you are good in front of the camera with a good natural speaking voice. Either way I will continue to watch but just offer the suggestion to hopefully help you grow your channel.

Really fantastic tips, Caleb! Thanks! 😃 I want to get a good doweling jig, but they are kinda expensive here in Brazil. But I'm still searching! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Dowel pin centers are the answer to perfect dowel alignment. I made a domino joiner. It's neat and dominos are cool, but I'm better with dowels. Good summation Caleb.

I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.

the whiskey barrel lid is crooked, just sayin.

Thanks for your videos. I like your background wall, but the logo is not level and the OCD in me is getting annoyed everytime I see it ;-)

I know I'm about to ruffle feathers.....but IMHO, everything with "Festool" on it is vastly overpriced and "dominos" are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Are they faster?....sure, a little....but not enough to justify the cost for me. I'll stick to dowels a d use pocket screws where appropriate....

Manufactures tend to copy each others tools, for example, look at how many companies now make their versions of a track saw, why haven’t we’ve seen a bunch of copycats of the domino machines?
