Joey Wheeler is without a doubt one of the greatest duelists of his generation and proved that he was more than capable of keeping up with Seto Kaiba and even the King of Games.

But before Joey was the Number 3 duelist in the world, he was a total beginner that didn’t even know how to properly build a deck and on his journey from noob to pro he made a lot of mistakes and misplays, both in his duels and his deckbuilding.

So today we’re going to be looking at Joey’s 10 worst cards, how they slowed him down from proving himself as a true duelist, and why these cards are just as unlucky in the actual TCG.

Joey's arc truly embodied the story of many of us back in the day. First, we didn't know what we were doing, and filled our decks with useless garbage, misplaying all the time. But eventually, we learned and adapted... by shoving a Jinzo into our deck and let it carry us.

Kaiba: 'Play your last pathetic card, Yugi.' Yugi: 'My grandpa's deck has no pathetic cards, Kaiba.' Joey: 'Yea!' Yugi: 'He shoved them all into Joey's deck.' Joey: 'Yea!...wait, what?'

One card he used that was completely nerfed was graceful and skull dice. They could've been game winning if they weren't changed to be the result x100.

Ngl watching Joey make these cards work was where half the enjoyment of the series came from

I think what's weird about Metal Dragon is that technically, Joey didn't really summon it. He just equipped Metal Morph to Red Eyes and it just sort of morphed into Metal Dragon and being more like a weird pseudo card. The same kind of applies to Metal Zoa and Heavy Metal King. Just weird early Yu-Gi-Oh shenanigans.
  • early yugioh anime rules seemed to work closer to something like dnd than a card game. Spells seemed to largely come from spell caster monsters while warriors used weapons as equipment.
  • A funny thing about real life Parasite Paricide; there was one of those which fell into my possession as a kid because someone used it in a duel with my brother and then forgot to ask for it back. Eventually, one of us also lost it in another duel because, yet again, we forgot it was still in the opponent's deck. I like to think kids are still handing around the same copy of Parasite Paracide to this day.

The funny thing is in S4 Metal Red Eyes did have the attack modifier so it was way better then the version we got IRL
  • Legendary fisherman and the whale ritual monster he won from Mako definitely deserved a spot

Joey was a great example of a poor dude with junky cards who formed a deck based on the best of what he have, he is something like yusei from season 1

I always found it strange that Jinzo didn't just immediately replace Red-Eyes as Joey's ace the moment he got it. It has the same Attack, requires one less tribute, and has a really good (at the time) effect. Red-Eyes costs double the tribute fodder for the same Attack and zero effect whatsoever.
  • Talking about Joey's bad cards. Joey "Why I oughta! Yugi's gramps taught meh there's no bad cards ya hear!".

Im surprised you didn't really harp on the fact that Insect Queen is just a bad fit for Joey's deck for typing reasons. He has no insect support or other insect monsters in general. So he can't even get the most out of its effects and use it as a serious beat stick.

The amount of times we say "I summon Time Wize'hd" or "Kunaiiiii wi'chains" when in a discord call with my friend because of Joey is great. Just playing a completely separate game and when we're boned and have nowhere to go we pull a anime get out of jail free card with "Time wize'hd" in hope that the heart of the cards, aka, some miracle saves us.

Joey didn't even play Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon. He was simply using his vanilla Red-Eyes equipped with Metalmorph.

My favorite part of Parasite Paracide is any time a Yugo-tuber uses it they are always confused that it's effect failes when it get attacked onto.

Not sure if it'd count as a "bad card that Joey used", but one of the riskiest Spell Cards he played was "Roulette Spider". Don't even know if it's been released IRL, but I know that it had an even higher risk of backfiring on him than Time Wizard. Joey used that in his first Battle City duel against Espa Roba on the latter's ace monster, Jinzo, where it was spun like a roulette that would only stop when Espa told it to. There were FIVE potential targets. Two of them were the duelists directly while the other three were any of the other monsters on the field, with Espa making a comment in his head that Joey's deck was so lame that he had nothing to lose. Upon ordering Jinzo to stop spinning, it pointed at Espa's only other monster: Reflect Bounder. Both were destroyed because of Reflect Bounder's effect while winning Joey the duel.

As a reminder, Weevil had to cheat to make his deck work against Joey.

Do Mai Valentine's worst cards! It might be tough though since her's were fairly good. Backrow removal and counter cards like Mirror Wall.
  • 20:51 Idea to improve these cards: Gearfried The Adamantine Knight (EARTH) Level 4 Warrior/Tuner/Effect This card’s name is always also treated as “Gearfried The Iron Knight. Cannot be destroyed by monsters who’s Level/Rank/Link is 4 or lower. (Quick Effect) You can destroy any card(s) equipped to this card, then increase or decrease this card’s level by up to the number of destroyed cards. Once per turn, you can tribute 1 card from your hand or field: Add 1 card to your hand from your deck or GY that mentions “Gearfried” in its name or effects. ATK/1800 DEF/1600 Gearfried Unbound Quick-Play Spell Tribute 1 “Gearfried” monster you control: Special Summon 1 "Gearfried the Master of Arms" from your hand, deck or GY. You can shuffle this card you own that is banished or in the GY into your deck while you control a face-up “Gearfried” monster: Add 1 Equip Spell to your hand from your deck or GY. Gearfried the Master of Arms (LIGHT) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Warrior/Effect Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned with "Gearfried Unbound". Can declare additional attacks per battle phase, equal to the number of cards equipped to this card. (Quick Effect) You can shuffle this card from your hand or GY into your deck: Add 1 Spell/Trap that mentions “Gearfried” in its name or effects to your hand from your deck or GY. Each time a card is equipped to this card: Apply 1 of the following effects: ⚪️Destroy 1 card your opponent controls. ⚪️Add 1 card that mentions “Equip” in its name or effects to your hand from your deck or GY. ATK/2600 DEF/2200
