Published 2023-01-08
Bonjour à tous.

This week at the chateau, we take a look back at when we bought the crumbling Chateau de Lalacelle. Abandoned for over 40 years, this beautiful monument was in a sad state of disrepair, with crumbling chimneys, broken widows and leaking roof, the chateau did not have must life left in her.

With the start of the restoration in 2021 we look through some of the massive jobs over the two years of owning a abandoned chateau in 20 minutes, the family have achieved so much in this time with beautiful finished rooms.

join us on our family journey restoring this beautiful chateau to its former glory.

About us,

We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.

The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.

Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.

Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

I love the fact that you kept the heart of the chateau alive. You didn’t restore it to a modern home. You kept the essence of that amazing architecture, and made it a home again. c’est juste magnifique!!
  • You can almost hear the sigh of relief from the house that it has been healed from inside out, beautiful job!
  • @leonj6206
Holy, I can’t believe you guys remodeled the castle only by family members, only spend 2 years! YOU GUYS ARE INCREDIBLE GENIUS! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊❤

That final shot, magnificent! Watching this, I could almost feel the place weeping with joy at being saved. Say what you want about today's youth, but these young people prove that there are some that appreciate the old and aren't afraid to work to restore it to it's former glory. Congratulations to you.

From the moment this channel began, I have been here. Through the back breaking work, the disappointments, tears and struggles...there was something else that rose far above this. The determination, love, smiles, encouragement and family. The pain staking details on every single job, just that perfect piece to make it all come together, that hue of paint or stain that changed the entire room or piece. The incredible talent of each member of the family came together in unison every single day of the last 2 years. THIS is how you renovate a chateau!!!!❤ Standing ovation!!!!!👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
  • It’s nearly impossible to fathom the daunting renovations that stood before you just two years ago, and how much the four of you and Jonathan have accomplished. You had a handful of wonderful volunteers and family help along the way, but none of you could ever be accused of laziness, that’s for sure. Imagine what the chateau will be in the next two years. Congratulations!! xx

Buying a chateau is a very tempting idea, but really it is for those that can do a lot of the work themselves or have a very generous disposal income to do the restoration. I really admire all of those that adventured themselves to buy this properties that have been abandoned for so many years and put so much hard work in bringing them back to life. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us! ❤

"Renovation" for such a gem would be "vandalization" în my view. I'm so glad that you took great pain in restoring it to its glory days, with care and heart.
  • What struck me the most with this video, besides how far you’ve all come in your DIY efforts, is the immense amount of editing that it took to make the video itself. And your music was perfect!! Awesome job!

I am from the US, and I was a contractor/designer for more than 40 years. I have been with you all since the beginning of your journey. You are my guilty pleasure, I can not wait for your next episode each week, ready for my thumbs up. I love the “love” you bring as a family and the talent you share to put this beautiful Chateau back where it belongs. Congrats to a family that really deserves it. ❤️A big fan from Fresno, California, USA.

Impressive video. I started a bit late (graduated from my doctorate program at age 30 in 2016 with 170k in school loan debt). Managed to pay off my debt by 2019 and currently have a house and 250k total in investments (combo of profit share, 401k and a brokerage account). I'm not very knowledgeable in investing, so I just have my investing currently in index funds mainly voo, but have been putting a lot into schd the past few months. I dunno if that's the optimal strategy, but psychologically it is very set it and forget it, and prevents me from obsessing over individual stock performance.

I love how tenderly the paneling was removed, repaired, then rehung.
  • @Cbozflorida
The amount of work y’all have done in just two years is astounding 👏❤️
  • @sonjajohn1166
At the end, I cried. Y’all brought life back into this place. Thank you for restoring this beauty.

Repurposing the materials in the chateau was cost effective. My favorite parts were the wood staining, the dogs, and discovering the potential the chateau had in becoming a home. Fantastic Restoration.

Merci à nos amis anglais de restaurer et d'entretenir notre patrimoine français et européen. Il est important aujourd'hui que nous soyons tous solidaires les uns des autres !
  • This is spectacular!! The careful thought of each room's restoration is clearly evident. The furnishings, decor, colors, fixtures, finishings....perfect! I love how you have respected the chateau's history and kept so much of the original finishings, woodwork etc, opting to restore them to their former glory as they would have been in its heyday, rather than replace them...wallpaper the panels...or paint over them. What you have done is exactly how i envisioned it should look. I cannot even imagine how much work and stress, frustration, blood, sweat and tears you have put into this project....and looking at the size of the place you are nowhere close to being finished. Not many, myself included, have the guts (or finances) to take on such a colossal project. Thank you for preserving such a beautiful piece of history.
  • You can't help but admire and respect the dedication and determination these people put into restoring that magnificent home.❤️❤️❤️
  • @Chrissieannie
Undaunted, it's simply remarkable how so much has been achieved, so thoroughly, so beautifully, so tastefully, by so few of you in just 2 years. Bravo to a wonderful family!
  • @rosebud7722
I'm so excited that you bought that abandoned chateau. Too many are being lost because of decaying and rotting away...It's nice to know that people like yourself are buying and fixing them up back to its glory days! Now, it's absolutely breathtakingly beautiful! Thanks for the share! Blessings 😊
