DIY Watercolor Ground - Part 2 Watercolor Tips with Tina Schmidt

Published 2021-07-11
In this video, I apply the watercolor ground I made directly to canvas. My first video on the actual mixing process is found in my other video in how to make your own watercolor ground. If you have not seen that video on the mixing process and discussion, please check out the link below before beginning with this video on mixing and applying your own watercolor ground:

In this video, I discuss the process of applying the formula to a canvas.

Tips in the discussion:
Let the watercolor ground on the canvas be bone dry before painting over it! Otherwise, you may pick up the uncured ground with your paint application and it will become cloudy or opaque, smearing your beautiful transparent paints in with the ground. In order for the ground to do it's job and become fully absorbent as 140 or 300 lb. watercolor paper (cold press), you need to be patient. Follow the instructions in the video for best results!

I painted a full watercolor painting on the canvas first. I wanted the fluid action of wet on wet and got exactly that: a nice feathery "bleed" in the background without cauliflower effects. Then I followed up with textures here and there with paper collage and more paint. The results were pleasing to say the least!

Bless you also ! I use a high density foam roller 4”or 6” they are white and are wonderful ! No lines marks on the canvas . I use this for pastel canvas as well . Thanks for your recommendation on the recipe.
