UPDATE: The Stuart Cello Pickup is now available on Ebay!
I simultaneously recorded two cello pick-ups. the Realist by David Gage and the Stuart Pick-Up (my invention). Please take a listen and decide, WHICH SOUNDS BETTER TO YOU?

I actually felt that B sounded better in the upper range.  File A sounds good in the lower range, but seems to carry some heaviness towards the upper range.  It could be that the putty used starts to add too much damping in the upper range?  Not an audio engineer and a mediocre cellist, but just sharing what I'm hearing.  Would love to see your response to fluffy's comments, too.

I feel b sounds better. A sounds a bit muddy. But I wish a pickup combined both the high and low range. They both seem focused on each kind of exclusively.

I would use both tbh and then switch between them for different sections.
  • @lavinedacosta
File A sounded more realistic to my ears by far. Thank you for taking the trouble to make this video.
  • Clearly recording A sounds must better. Where is your system available?
  • @Melinewaxx
Hi John. To my ears, wave file A wins hands down. I'm curious to learn more about this new system !
  • Hi John, looks like I’m arriving late to this discussion. I’m not a sound engineer, I’m only a beginner cello student. But I do have a good pair of ears that I have been developing since I was a child listening to classical music from an early age. I do know what a good cello sounds like, and to my opinion, your systems sounds by far way better than the other. I agree with your view of the boxy, compressed sound. Is your gear available for purchase?
  • @Sutlifffamily
I preferred A. I am very interested in what you have when it's available.
  • @Matiasbiteh
I like darker sounds so my vote is for the A file but it may cause some issues with the low register of the cello. Maybe it is because of where you putted the pickup
  • @eckart222
You maybe won the middle range, at which yours sounded a little better to me than the realist. The most irritating thing about file A was the (imo) exaggerated way the notes faded into each other. The realist filtered more noise, but I think exactly enough and not too much to sound like what I consider natural.
  • I'm no expert. But I do prefer A by a long shot, in every range. My mic experience has been SO disappointing. I play in a smallish band, and any mic system we've used picks up and amps all the sounds of the other instruments without giving the tech guys what they need to balance the acoustic against the other instruments.

By far...WAV file A. It sounds real, more powerful sound. A sound with more "body". Definitely your system it's way better than other, which fail badly when it comes to pick up and play back a cello sound as close as possible to the sound to studio microphone or a pair of small diaphram mics. I would definitely use your system.

Is the Stuart Pick Up still available to buy? I cannot find it on Ebay
  • @Tostra1997
Please let me know when your pickup is available!
  • @jasondswanson
another vote for B, but they both seem like they could be eq'd to sound very similar
  • @OlegSpb2008
your pickup definetely sounds better in low and mid register, and in high register the other pickup sounds more focused to my ear) thanx for the video
  • @MogDog66
I think I'd have to agree with you. File A simply sounded fuller and richer, while B sounded limited and a almost a little fake and generated without a lot of body in behind it. Really neat stuff!

where do I get a stuart pick up, I liked A also, and I am a musician that works with a cellist weekly
