Resident Evil 8: Village - The Ultimate Critique - Luke Stephens

If you want my quick opinion on Resident Evil 8: Village, I’d say the game is really solid, well made, it’s fun, and certainly AAA quality. But, recommending is tricky. My first run on PC was about six hours. My subsequent runs on PS5 and Series X were even shorter at 5.5 hours and 4 hours respectively. Honestly, 6 hours is not much for a game I paid $70 for; I enjoyed it and felt it was a lean experience, but it doesn't change the fact that for that amount of money you can get A LOT more game. Not every game needs to be Persona 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2, but six hours is not much. Remember how much people freaked over The Order 1886’s length? Granted, you can get more out of repeated runs and more detailed runs where you collect all the doodads, upgrade the best weapons, and search every nook and cranny. That’s why this is all up your personal preference. While I’m ok with the price tag to length, considering the extremely high quality of the game, I don’t have any issue if you aren’t ok with it. If you need more gameplay time then so be it. There is no issue there. In my mind it’s the same evaluation that takes place when somebody is looking at a cocktail menu. Some people are OK paying more for the same quantity just because it’s a higher quality, while others would much prefer to buy a fishbowl and get a lot of bang for their buck even if it’s of a low quality. Depending on your circumstances, goals, and preferences, both of these are valid options. So if you look at the six hours for $70 that you’ll get with resident evil eight and are repulsed we have no disagreement. I would say just wait for a sale and enjoy it then. If it’s any consolation, I really enjoyed my time with the game and it was one of the most high quality and the lean experiences I’ve had with a AAA title in the last year. But with that said let’s get into it.

  • I will say one thing I do adore about the lords is because of their specialized areas, it sort of feels like little homages to different forms of horror. Dimetresque is classic bram stoker-Esqu horror, Donna is psychological and uncanny horror (things that usually aren’t meant to be scary but are scary), Moreau is “the unknown” ocean horror people fear and Cthulhu monster vibe (harder to describe sorry) and Heisenberg is obviously focused on body horror and body modification horror like human centipede or The Iron Man (Tetsuo)..idk just something I love to admire in this take on RE villains

I'm at the beginning and I am SO confused. Resident Evil has gone back and forth emphasizing and deemphasizing suspense horror and action its entire life and Village is a completely valid and logical part of that lifecycle. Speaking about horror more broadly, horror franchises tend to become more action oriented over time in general. Whatever you feel about it, Village's design choices make perfect sense in the context of Resident Evil and it is NOT a departure from the rest of the series.
  • You're first run was 6 hours? I'm sorry you feel like that wasn't impressive, but that is practically a speed run for a first playthrough. You have to be in a tiny percentage of people to understand a complaint like "it's too short", while rushing to the end.

I understood the reference! Robinhood: Men in Tights!

"People were obsessed with Lady Dimitrescu." Yeah...we're all looking at you Markiplier 🤣

I like the part that Ethan’s heart is the only thing keeping him half way human. Once is gone he just becomes another molded and falls apart

I finished RE7 in 14 hours and RE8 in 17 hours. And there was hardly a moment I was stuck, but rather; I explored the games and tried to get the most out of it. Sure you can finish in 6 hours if you zip through and skip practically half the game and just speed run towards the end. I enjoyed the review but this obsession and constant harping about “only 6 hours” just makes zero sense unless your goal was just to zip through the entire game in the quickest time possible.

There's been so many action focused RE games already prior to 8, feels tone deaf to say this is new for the franchise. RE8 isn't that original, it feels entirely like a blend of 4 & 7 which was apparent when it was first revealed. RE8 even has the purest horror sequence in the entire franchise (the doll house).

38:30 they didn't pursue him because they thought he died from the spinning blades trap in Heisenbergs game

I normally never comment on vidoes but some of the the stuff youre saying..boggles my mind. The grenade launcher and the Magnum are just "fine"? The Sniper is not viable later? Youre first run was 6 hours? Holy shit, how much did you miss then? I really dont get it.
  • 11:42 - 12:02 This basically confirms that he was doing a speedrun, like everyone was saying. I've wiped out EVERY single enemy in both normal and hard difficulties, leaving no stone unturned. I ended up finishing in 17 hours, then 12 respectively. It's only a "6 hour game" if you make it one.
  • @SpacedAug
The sniper carried me through to the end of the game. It was my very high DPS "oh shit oh shit" weapon!
  • @Andre_APM
I don't think a lot of being action in RE8 is "new" for Resident Evil. RE7 had to act as a reset for the franchise because RE5 and RE6 were well known for being heavy on action and very light on horror. RE8 and RE7 both have a way better balance of the two. Edit: yes, RE4 also had a good balance, as did the classics (especially the OG RE3) Ultimately this doesn't feel like the "ultimate" critique because there is so much missing here.
  • 6 hours? You definitely didn't get near all the treasures. If you don't explore and don't do half the content in the game, how can you say its too short when you missed most side things?
  • @flo.g.
While there are many viable points in this review, I could definitely tell that it only took you 6 hours to finish it because it seems like you missed MANY things by just rushing through it. Just for context, the average playthrough seems to sit at about 9 to 10 hours (it took me personally 12). For such an in depth review it kind of boggles me that you seemingly didn't take your time to explore the whole thing
  • @toonpacha2396
It was a fun game but they did my man Heisenberg dirty with not having him more prominent
  • You definitely rushed through the game if your first run through was 6 hours
  • @chibilaryla
You paid $60-70 for the honor of having Lady Dimitrescu chase you around. That is worth every penny, my dude lolol
