    The issue is that she is exaggerating the reality of the situation. Do couples typically have a shared underwear drawer? Clothes drawers? This is just part of the logic that typically is present in a large amount of males. If there is room, it typically can/will be utilized, and not having multiple peoples things all in one place when there is plenty of usable room, there's no reason for her to be that crazy emotional about it. Instead of jumping straight to, "We're not roommates. I don't __ my roommates." Maybe ask why he wants it separate and actually LISTEN to the reasoning behind the choice. Jumping to an emotional freak out over something so trivial will drive any sane man away. I understand that in the couple you're referencing, the dude was not an ideal dude, but my point still stands in general for a large portion of men. They will turn and run if their significant other freaks out about trivial things like where things are stored.
