I have always preferred the F50 over the F40 unlike most people. F50 is a very underrated car.
  • One of the coolest sounding engine families of all time! I have owned my Bburago F50 since new, about 33 years now. It doesn't make any noise at all.
  • @Toxic2T
Always been an F50 guy, since the first time I saw it in NFS II back in 2000. Ill never get why the "car guys" used to hate on it so much back in the late 00s and early 2010

I think Enzo Ferrari definitely would have loved the F50 but I think he would have liked the 550 Maranello more as it's closer in spirit to his vision of what Ferraris should be: big powerful V12 up front sending power to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox and a driver s***ing his pants in the middle of it all.
  • The F50 was a thing of beauty. Not only its lines, but that glorious sound track.
  • @anthonyohara2132
My understanding is one of the major criticisms of the F50 was the immense discomfort felt whilst driving. The consequence of bolting the engine directly to the frame was extreme vibrations and harshness, so much so, that many who drove the car said it was a painful experience.

0:18 The video talks about the F50 having something that no other Ferrari ever had, a true Formula One based engine. However, there are two other engines and series of cars, that are contenders for this claim. #1 The Ferrari Lampredi V12 engine as used in sports and GT cars such as the Ferrari 340 America, the Ferrari 250 Europa and the Ferrari 410 Superamerica, but first used in racing. Ferrari began racing in Formula One using the 1.5 L supercharged Ferrari V12 'Colombo' engine. But engineer Aurelio Lampredi, was able to persusde Ferrari that a non supercharged 4.5 L engine, which was allowed under the rules, would be more successful. The purpose build Lampredi V12 race engine, had a wider bore spacing than the Colombo V12, and was first racing in F1 in 1950, winning championship races in 1951. Being a race engine, it was missing some features expected in road cars, for example, unlike the Colombo V12, there was no provision for a starter motor to be mounted on the engine block. Some people might argue that the formula in use was not Formula One, but a pre-war "voiturette" formula. However, the FIA list the 1950 season as the first Formula One championship. #2 The Ferrari Dino V6 engine in 65° V6 format, was designed for Formula One, Formula Two and sports car racing. The 65° V-angle allowed straight intakes in a DOHC V6 engine configuration, and powered the Ferrari 246 F1 car in 1958, becoming the first V6-engined car to win a Formula One Grand Prix. The Fiat Dino and "Ferrari" Dino road cars used 2.0 L 65° V6 DOHC Dino engines, and this came about because there was a need for 500 production vehicles, to homologate the engine for racing under new F2 regulations. The 65° V6 race engine design, was converted to road use, with some of the work being carried out by Aurelio Lampredi, who now worked for Fiat (side note: Lampredi is also responsible for the engine which became the most successful WRC engine of all time). Thanks for the video, a lot of great info there.

Both the F40 and the F50 are my dream cars. That's real cars that electric cars never can be or even come close to!!!
  • @bernardomotard
F50 is a straight up F1 V12, only Ferrari ever to use one, decades before the AMG project One. Best Ferrari ever.
  • Great video as always! The F50 has been for years my ultimate dream car!
  • @bobhill3941
I loved this video so much, fantastic in depth history and technical information as always, I never knew about the F50 GT! I had a model of an F50 in red as a kid in the late 90's. If Enzo could've seen this, I think he would've been proud!
  • Did I hear it right when you said roller main bearings?…if so WOW! No wonder it wanted to rev with titanium rods and so forth! I love the fact that F1 engine tech eventually filters down to street cars albeit very expensive street cars🤙
  • Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been a fan of the F50 for many years, and of Japanese motorsports because I have lived there for years and speak the language. Thank you for including Gan San's F50 test as the outro footage. That test he did, of a somewhat track-modified F50, is absolute gold. You can see the red steering wheel, but I believe that car also had a titanium Tubi exhaust, which really transforms the F50's sound into that F1 sound. It's abslute bliss. Highly recommend checking out that video, just search Motoharu Kurosawa F50.

Beautiful car and … an even better engine sound. Thank you.
  • @zethloveless7238
Sorry it’s always gonna be the f40 for me but perhaps it’s due to my age 😁. I mean I get it the f50 is special in its own right but the f40 is just so timeless and perfect to me😅
  • @igor240898433
F50 was always my favourite Ferrari. The F40 looks better, but nothing beats N/A V12 paired with a manual!
