  • @reaganmonkey8
I have heard that the goal of Blender developers aren’t trying to compete with industry standard software, but to make it for the masses.
  • @Dilligff
So essentially Hydra in an 'in-between' checkpoint renderer. If the scene works in Hydra it will port to other softwares and can be refined from there. It isn't intended for final output, it is a tool for porting to other engines. At least that is the general idea I'm getting from it.
  • @Virtualblueart
I’ve only recently been seriously diving into blender and I’m very glad something this amazing isn’t just free but so well documented.
  • @totheknee
This really separates the Blender community into two clear cuts: those who understand how absolutely powerful Hydra + USD is, and how amazing it is to have this integration; and those who don't understand that. People outside the industry really don't seem to understand what USD is and why it is useful. I started working on getting USD converted to Python 3 over 5 years ago so it could work with Blender. Since then, Pixar added Python 3 support, and Blender Foundation started integrating USD into Blender, but not at all in a production capacity. USD needs to be integrated from the ground up, and this is a step towards that. tl;dr: Blender artists: "it needs must be pretty to be useful." Pixar/industry: "it needs must be useful to be useful."
  • @PingerSurprise
Outside of the USD utility, Hydra is indeed not a "render" engine, but rather a "preview" engine. This is more of a compromise between Workbench and EEVEE, where you can view animations with textured models, but with the performance of Workbench. VERY useful to work faster while reducing the electricity bill.
  • @princeajaero7903
thanks for explaining this. I love blender and i have always used it for most of my works, so it is great to see it strive. I will even be having a blender tutorial in my college
  • @migovas1483
As you said, is a good tool to 'check' if your stuff is done properly in the HYDRA frame work USD, so if you are sending things to let's say karma in Houdini' you can check how things are coming. I don't know if USD will REALLY become the standard, everyone seems to love it, but still there is a lot of stuff in between to account for, is not like magic format that understands everything, but is pretty good.
  • @Super-id7bq
Hydra is more a viewport than a render engine. It's used in Katana which is great for industry compatibility.
  • @geroutathat
I think the industry wants it so they can outsource stuff to smaller groups who can work in blender for free, and you're basically just paying them for some time. You dont even expect them to render it at movie levels, being able to work on stuff like even a mid level laptop if needed. Graphics seem to be taking a step back in movies, and they need to get more people working on projects as cheaply as possible. I hope it pulls off, it could be a great side hustle for many 3d graphic artists. Popping home to work on a more exciting project in blender without all the licence headaches or needing a super computer to render.
  • @groupups11
with blender, houdini and unreal you already have a package that can challenge the industry standard softwares. I think Unreal will be the go to spot for rendering in the future.
  • @orcunakman
Hydra needs a great USD support and Blender simply isn't ready for USD pipelines. The render engine is just showing that there'll be improvements on USD platform. Also USD support alone isn't enough to put Blender into a greater pipelines. All other software kits are already in the front. Blender is a bit late.
  • I think its more like an utility render for workflow ¿no? Instead of a final render thing.
  • @unknownusrname
I had no idea that hydra was a thing untill this video
  • @johnaquino7619
So, if I understand correctly, Hydra Storm is the new render engine added to Blender. This engine uses the USD file format, something which is getting use in the industry. Speculation allows for the possibility that this is an effort to standardize 3D within the industry, so that all compatible 3D programs (including Blender) are options within the production pipeline. Is that the idea?
  • @fruityloopsquan
hey bro awesome video! always luv seeing such good content. So give me some perspective since im new to all this CGI stuff. I have experience with blender and unreal engine, but i keep hearing about other programs that are considered the very best like houdini and Maya. I understand there is quite the gap between blender/unreal and Houdini, so would i really be doing a disservice to myself if i choose blender/unreal over Houdini? Ive seen ur video comparing Blender and houdindi n whatever but im still not too clear on some things. Thanks
  • If you can animate with it its industry standard as long it delivers....
  • I already use *.UDSC as cache format for Blender, faster than the alembic cache and faster using Hydra.
