Things to Think About, For Older E-Biikers

Published 2024-02-03
E-Bike safety should be everyone's priority, but for those of us over 55, I believe there is a lot more to consider before buying a E-Bike. When we get older our cognitive abilities do diminish as we age. For some of us sooner than later, but for others, they may age gracefully. I just ask that everyone really thinks about how active they are, know your abilities, and what level of E-Biking are you looking to do, before buying any E-Bike. Test drive and do your research.

I believe most of your audience that are 50 and over are old "trail blazers" like myself. We all owned motor cycles. Yeah we are older but not dead right? :D I use my bike to commute to work because I love riding. I don't do trails, sidewalks. I am 'Not that A$$ H" guy. I go fast. I don't belong on a bike trail, paths or anything like it and if I am forced on it, I never go over 15mph. I have laid my bike down 3 times do to wet conditions, wet leaves on the ground, and hitting a pot hole at night. You hit it right. Gear UP!!! Gear up. Never take it fore granted. Even taking a short ride to the store around the corner. GEAR UP!

I will be 76 years old this month and just took delivery of my E-MTB.....I can't keep the bugs out of my teeth. It has been years since I have enjoyed something this much. Amazing technology that can be tweaked to your liking. Just today I received my new sleep system and have everything laid out for a bikepacking trip. Now I all I need is a good collapsible fishing rod so I can walk some streams and lakes.

I'm over 66. Got my first ebike 2 years ago. I have a fat tire folder and a moped style ebike. Daily peddler.
  • that speed junkie is right up our generations alley , we were built for it

I turned 73 this last January and i brought my first ebike,, what i went for was Cyrusher Ovia,, Its brilliant , done a few settings to make the bike even faster.. Every old person should get one.
  • My wife and I are 63 years old, and we just purchased our first ebikes. We went with the Fabulous Furious Road Warrior Ult. It's a fat-tire, large frame bike that weighs in I believe just over 100 lbs. The size and weight are of little concern to us as we both rode various motorcycles over the years, Honda's, Harley's, Yamaha's...lighter bikes to heavier ones, we've got some good milage and experience under our belts, that's for sure. Riding ebikes isn't going to be any sort of challenge for us as far as handling them goes and riding them full throttle. Our challenge will come with pedaling them and trying to not use a lot of assist in order to get some decent exercise at least for a good 30 minutes of the ride, after that, we can boost the assist and get on the throttle a bit more and just have some fun riding together again.

Your video seems to weigh heavily on the side of fear and caution. I prefer hearing the joys of riding our eBikes. There’s risk in overdoing things and, more risk in becoming sedentary, no? I’m 80 years old, ride an Aventon Ebike for exercise. And fun!

Any amount of education is good, and although Joey is blowing through stop signs he seems like he is well aware of his surroundings. I have learned something watching this
  • This video really rings home with me @ 70 yrs old, and I need the exercise along with the assist. I used to ride dirt bikes and peddle bikes but I bought a crashed e bike for cheap. It is a full size hardtail and it is a handfull, and I call it a beast. I'm going to hit the gym to get my overall strength back. I'm like you and my flexibility is lacking, and my balance is also way less than it used to be. I will start out slow and decide if I will keep on riding it.

I bought a Jetson Bolt Pro last year. I rebuilt it over the winter. It is now a molehill bike. I wear a hi vis hoodie, have lights, and obnoxious music on a bluetooth speaker. I used hand signals and my hi vis gloves are even shiny. I still had 3 close calls and a garbage man wanting to fight me in a 30 minute ride.

When you're coming up from behind a pedestrian on a trail, use your bell. I see you have on your bike. I do a lot of walking on trails and I'm always appreciative when a biker makes sure to let me know that he's (or she's) coming up fast on my six. If you don't have a bell or other sound device, then just call out to let them know. It's basic trail courtesy. Btw, I recognize the terrain. I'm a town over from you. Happy riding.

In some places a bicycle can use a stop sign as a Yield, you can ride on the sidewalks, and e-bikes can use bike trails. Where I live those are not true.

Bought my first e-bike 50+. Had to Knock off cobwebs/rusty bits on Rules of the Road. Personally, almost Never ride on sidewalks. When needing to cross busy roadway, always crossing at stop lights, making sure to make "Eye contact" w/drivers. Hen riding, eyes/head are on Perpetual swivel coz >90% of the time, drivers Look but are Not Seeing bike riders! Never, Never, Never...riding w/ear buds, headphones, ear plugs. And since our local LEO substation is So Small...Courtesy & Responsible Riding are Tantamount! I dunno....Am I in the Shrinking Minority?!...N-O Hot-dogging!...Stay Safe Ride Safer, Joey...Keep the rubber to the pavement!...Aloha from Hawaii

  • @Randyphx
Im over 50, and I've went over 10k on electric unicycles that go over 40mph. Its great time to be alive!
  • @typhoontom
Here in Japan, anything over 24kp/h requires a special license, tags, and insurance. They don't play here. So, I will get one that does not exceed that speed.
  • @leeinwis
Yes, but take my advice and ONLY get a bike with DUAL suspension .
