Plagas removal scene - Resident Evil 4 Remake

The infection seems to be much further along in the remake. Ashley has to be carried by Leon, and is barely conscious. She is implied to be minutes away from being beyond the point of no return. Leon is very nearly as bad off. In my view, he's thinking that either this works or they're both dead anyway, and she's worse than him, so it makes sense for her to go first. He was hoping he could tough it out for a few minutes to cure himself too. But she's the President's daughter, and he's expendable security. If he died and survived, she'd at least have a chance to escape or hide until the extraction team arrived to collect them. But if she died, everything was for nothing. So I actually like that they switched that from the original.

Question: During the walk to the laboratory while hallucinating, can you actually die here? Like, can Las Plagas take over your body and then get a game over screen?
