I've been up and down and around and round and back again
Been so many places I can't remember where or when
And my only boss was the clock on the wall and my only friend
Never really was a friend at all

(CHORUS)
I've traded love for pennies
Sold my soul for less
Lost my ideals in that long tunnel of time
And I've turned inside out and around about and back and then
Found myself right back where I started again

Once I had myself a million, now I only got a dime
Difference don't seem quite as bad today
With a nickle or a million I was searching all the time
For something that I'd never lost or left behind

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Well now I'm in my second circle and I'm heading for the top
I learned alot of things along the way
I'll be careful while I'm climbing cuz it hurts alot to drop
When your down nobody gives a damn anyway

(REPEAT CHORUS)

  • You know why Jim Croce hits the souls of us people…because he wasn’t a liar.
  • He will never be forgotten....the Cardi b’s will come and go but the Jim Croces will never fade
  • Had this sent to me by my mother while sitting in federal penitentiary about to be released for selling 5 kilos of meth. Jim words really hit home and i took it to heart. 10 years later I'm still drug free, my mindset has returned to normal, and i started a family of my own, have a great job, making a honest living and happier then ever. All thanks to Jim's lyrics which changed my life!!!

Is it weird that I'm 16 yrs old and i love this song and many Jim Croce other songs?
  • I was 15 when he died, I'm now 62 seems like yesterday. Croce and then Jackson Browne helped survive the seventies. Love me some Croce.

This is his probably one of his most underrated songs and he was a story teller.

Jim is one of those guys that doesn't have one bad song. I am so happy that I chose to watch PBS, one day out of my life in high school. I might have never found this music.

My Dad showed me Croce back in the 5th grade. I ended up doing a biography in 6th grade about his life.... I turn 30 this December and my Dad just passed in July. Croces music makes me feel close and grateful to my Dad. Music I’ll listen to for the rest of my life I thank them both
  • In my opinion.....this is the best song he ever wrote. Absolute masterpiece.

Know what ya mean Dude! I'm 69 and still spinnin' the tunes, especially the tunes like this one during a time when music was real. I told my listeners more than once, if they ever hear five minutes of dead air during my show, "you'll know I'm gone" and that's the way it should be.

This guy got me through my childhood years, I'm in my 60s now. Still here
  • Been listening to Jim Croce since I was 9 years old. That was fifty years ago. Just found this song a few weeks ago. This one is one of my top five favorites

My favorite song by one of my favorite artists. I'm often saddened that Jim can't be with us now. What a fabulous library of great music he would have created! His lyrics touch me deep inside. Could he have been only 30 years old? Such an Old Soul.

This song is a treasure. What a great songwriter. The man is gone but we still have his songs ❤
  • @daveb9698
You are not alone ... this guy was something great and underrated
  • I bought this album the day it came out in December, 1973 and absolutely wore this song out. As the song was fading out, I'd keep turning the volume up because I wanted to hear every single note until it was gone.
