Sometimes Link just wants to go swimming but forgets he only has so much energy before he drowns. While there was water in the original Legend Of Zelda games, Link couldn't jump in water until Adventure Of Link and throughout most Zelda games, he will drown if he jumps in without equipment or just runs out of breath/energy. Sometimes he will take damage, sometimes it's game over. A few games he just warps back with no harm.

I'd say that the Wind Waker drowning animation is very dark, especially with how vibrant and colourful the game is. Just the way Link's body floats to the surface, but we can't see his face is very dark to me. I can imagine some random person on their morning walk, then they see a blonde kid with the master sword and a green tunic, not responding to anything.

It's pretty disturbing to see and hear young children like young and toon link struggle to breath desperately and drowning while their lifeless body goes limp. Trauma inducing.
