After a couple of calm weeks in the tropics, the "main development region" of the Atlantic Ocean for tropical systems is showing signs of heating up, according to WRAL meteorologist Chris Michaels.

An area east of the Lesser Antilles has a 60% chance of development within the next seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center. The wave of low pressure could develop as it enters the Bahamas and head north or west. A weaker storm wouldn't be subject to the steering winds in the upper levels of the atmosphere, meaning it would drift westward into the Gulf. A stronger storm, believe it or not, would be more susceptible to the upper level steering winds. That would bring it closer to our coast or just offshore this weekend and early next week.

The most likely scenario is one that includes dangerous surf and rip currents along the North Carolina coast. A worst case scenario would involved more rain on saturated soils.
