FilmSpeak continues our exploration of the James Bond franchise with our Quantum of Solace video essay on Why Quantum of Solace is a Perfect James Bond Movie!

Quantum of Solace is the twenty second Bond film in the franchise and the second James Bond movie for Daniel Craig. Directed by Marc Forster, Quantum of Solace 007 also stars Olga Kurylenko, Mathiu Amalric, Gemma Arterton, and Judi Dench. Following the death of Vesper Lynd, James Bond (Daniel Craig) makes his next mission personal. The hunt for those who blackmailed his lover leads him to ruthless businessman Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a key player in the organization which coerced Vesper. Bond learns that Greene is plotting to gain total control of a vital natural resource, and he must navigate a minefield of danger and treachery to foil the plan. While Daniel Craig's first Bond film Casino Royale is often regarded as one of the best in the series, the follow up is often looked down upon as a mess and a product of the Writer's Strike. However we're here to show you that Quantum of Solace is underrated and deserves its time in the spotlight! If it's been years since you watched the Quantum of Solace movie or if you've never seen the second Daniel Craig James Bond movie, it's worth a revisit. Griffin (@griffschiller) explores and analyzes Quantum of Solace and makes a case for why Quantum of Solace is an underrated James Bond movie! Enjoy this video essay of Why Quantum of Salce is a Perfect James Bond Movie!

Bond: "Amongst other things, he tried to kill a friend of mine" Camille: "A woman?" Bond: "Yes. But its not what you think" Camille: "Your mother?" Bond: "She likes to think so" Although this is just Bond trying to cover up his true motivation for killing Greene, I do love how his relationship with M is weaved in throughout the story of these Craig films. Frankly, M is the best Bond girl, with Vesper coming in at a close second.

On it's own, Quantum Of Solace is slight, awkward, & undercooked but watching it back to back with Casino Royale, QoS is fueled by the first film's emotion & works as CR's final act/climax/epilogue & is best appreciated as a whole within the context of that two-movie story.

BTW I think Mathis' death hit harder for me than almost every other sub-character's death in the entire series.

I love the scene in the burning building. When Camille, a mirror for Bond to look at himself in (I mean she’s the closest to a female James Bond we’d gotten until we literally got a female 007 in No Time To Die), someone consumed with revenge and when she gets it, it’s… done. She gets nothing out of it, Madrano has a bullet in him and has left her nothing but another burning house to die in and she loses herself, curling up against the wall in abject terror unable to do a thing to save herself because in seeking revenge to quiet her trauma, she literally recreated it. Even as Bond finds her and embraces her like he did for Vesper, she can’t do a thing, even just expecting and wanting Bond to shoot them both rather than burn or do something about it. Bond has his arms wrapped around the end result of his vengeful journey. But in the end they’re both saved because they confided in and trusted each other. Bond takes her request for suicide, to make that one shot count and instead fires his gun to open the way forward and they both leap to safety together.
  • If you watch this movie through the ‘lens’ of Bond’s inconsolable rage, it makes more sense as a narrative. Great acting from Olga Kurylenko too because you see that Camille sees his rage and knows to stay detached from him. Excellent.

I love it when people Express different opinions about movies. You convinced me. I'll give it a rewatch. In fact, I'm going to revisit the piece Brosnan era too.

It’s one of my all-time favorites. There’s just something about this movie that captivates me when I watch it. The cinematography is wonderful the music is well timed and well done, the acting is very well done and the action is not too over-the-top or unbelievable maybe the plane scene is a little unbelievable but the rest of it is very exciting and very good. And the end battle between the villain and bond is a all-time favorite. This movie is very underappreciated but I think as more bond films will come out this one will be more appreciated for what it did.

Quantum has grown on me over the years. It's a shame the film needs an hour of explanation like this to fully appreciate what the filmmakers were going for. I wonder how great this could have been with another rewrite or two.

There's a different kind of beauty in QoS that makes me want to watch it again and again. It's essential in DC's story arc as Bond, what more it has really interesting characters like Mathis and Felix from CR and Fields and Camille. Frankly, I've been a huge fan of Rene Mathis and Felix Leiter of the Craig tenure, because they have such great chemistry with Bond

One thing I have always loved about the last scene of QOS is how it goes full circle with the beginning of CR, but instead of a black/white picture, Bond can now see the colours in between, a theme that fits perfectly to Bond's evolution as more than a blunt instrument and what Mathis says about the difficulty of distinguishing good and bad when you're more mature. Anyway, thanks for that awesome analysis, guys. Already looking forward to your next video.

The dogfight between the C-47 used by Bond and the SF-260 used by the bad guys is one of the best chase sequences ever made for a bond movie!
  • @rrassoc
"I'm afraid that your friend Mathis, is MY friend Mathis."
  • @justfreakingdye
The first time I ever watched Quantom of Solace I did so immediately after watching Casino Royale. In that regard, you are correct - the film is an amazing epilogue to Casino and the double feature is I think the best way to watch it

At first when I saw QoS when it was out, I thought it was dry. And then I gave it a 2nd viewing. And then a 3rd. And I began to appreciate it more and more because it felt like you were peeling layer after layer on the theme. And of course I loved the action, the non-verbal gags, the b-rolls, the consistent color theme. It's like an art house version of a Bond film - as an afterthought, that's pretty surprising. Throughout the film, as an audience you keep guessing "is he out for vengeance or not".
  • @Eamonshort1
It took the algorithm 2 years to recomend this me after its release, but im glad there are other Quantum defenders out there. Keep fighting the good fight dude
  • @bemasaberwyn55
I actually love this film. It made me actually like the actress Olga(who played Camille). Who got SEVERELY miscast in the dreadful hitman film with Timothy olyphant
  • @MyCandyBlue137
23:02 I love the way he told to Mathis what he drinks instead told him the name of martini. Such a very discreet storyteller.
  • @MattSaysHello
Great video. I’ve always thought QOS was underrated but I have an even deeper appreciation for it now. Thank you.
  • @blakel29
Just did a rewatch of Quantum. And it's so much better than culture says it is. Underrated bond masterpiece. Thanks for this great video!
