This is a video on how to single point thread on an engine lathe. The diameter of the shaft is 1/2" and the threads per inch is standard 13 threads per inch.

More and more people are forgetting and or not even bothering learning old fashioned manual mills and lathes! I salute you good sir!

Well done! You are an excellent instructor and this comment comes from a retired instructor! Have always been fascinated with lathes and recently obtained a metal mini-lathe and appreciate you machinists more each day! Being new I must ask what "single point" would be versus to? Thanks for the video!
  • It seem to me that while going in reverse you could accidentally reengage the piece at the wrong time and mess up the threads. Am I missing something, or is the track the cutting blade can take on the workpiece set so that even if you disengage and reengage at random it will always be on track?

My lathe has the thread cutting gears but no chart to set the thread pitch.. Any suggestions pls? Thank you
  • ...you don't need to shut off or reverse the spindle...and you don't need to engage the same number on the threading dial... ...you should include a disclaimer that this is the way YOU do it... ...not the way an actual machinist would do it...
