Follow Patrick McMillan as he travels to South Texas's Lower Rio Grande Valley, right on the southeast border of the United States and Mexico. Here, there is a surprisingly tropical climate with prairie, wetland, and forests, not to mention some wildlife unique specifically to the area. Ocelots, wild parrots, pelicans, and Aplomado falcons can all be found in this region. Nearby on the Island of South Padre, McMillan spots a squadron of spoonbills looking for a meal of crustaceans in the shallow water.

This was a great show, I hope that these little pockets of unique wildlife survive for many more generations. I think we owe it to the future generations! Thank you so much!

I miss Texas so much. I'm going to try and reach out to TPW to see if and how long they keep records of sighting reports for animals that are critically endangered and supposed to be extinct to see if there were any updates on the paperwork my mom and I filled out sometime between 2008 and 2012.

I live in Ontario Canada, and I have a prickly pear, growing in a gravel hill on my farm, it came from a cutting of a plant growing in a prairie in southern Ontario that was slated for development. I was asked to adopt the cutting because I have the gravely hills. It has grown large and has lovely yellow flowers.
  • Just yesterday I was recounting my memories of childhood in the Brownsville area 60 years ago and how beautiful it was…I also said I didn’t want to know what had been done to it. Sadly, now I know.
  • Excellent insight into these unique habitats. I also appreciate the fact that you name the species in the titles which is a huge help - just remember that to a European, 'blackbird' is a thrush

Lived in South Texas for several years, and sad to say I barely noticed. Humans can be SO self-centered!!
