They may only be useful as impromptu explosives, but cars have been an important part of the Fallout landscape. Their lore, and the real world cars that inspired their designs are quite fascinating. Lets see if you know the inspiration behind some the vehicles you walk by each game.

I always thought fallout had some nice cars I wish we had a drivable car and a map large enough to support it
  • @allanlane135
I belive the fire trucks in fallout 76 have got one tank for water and the other tank has the anti rad stuff used in those anti rad sprays we see in fallout 4 and 76. This would make sense when it come to car accidents when radiation is involved

It's not mentioned but the highwayman is also very obviously a reference to the Mad Max interceptor
  • @TheSantaRocker
IDK if anyone has said this but most if not the major cars you see around the highways can be found in MINT condition in the Watoga Underground Parking garage in Fallout 76. To access you need to run Becket's Questline.

Those cars were laying around for over 200 years, cut them some slack, they probably didn´t explode from a mere few bullets back when they were new. Probably. Nice video!

God with those speeds, car pedestrian incidents must be absolutely brutal.

The back portion of the cherrybomb reminds me more of the Ford Nucleon than the firebird, but the front is definitely firebird inspired. Kind of like the two had a baby
  • @spencer4685
i believe the cherry bombs “head lights” are actually jet intakes and the back “lights” are jet exhausts, which explains the fins being vertical stabilizers with the car looking like a flying wing design that many jets of the 50’s-60’s had

A future video should include the "Pegasus". It's an Atomic shop item car of unknown manufacturer we can only see as either a workbench or a destroyed husk.

This is well done. The only comment I can think of is on the Police Car - that wasn't a spotlight, but an air-driven Siren. The spotlights would be on the doors to be controlled from the inside. Hood and fender-mounted Sirens were used in the 1950's, some mounting additional lights.

Cherry Bomb is very likely a reference to early 'glass pack' mufflers that were designed to add a loud yet throaty sound to the exhaust. Cherry Bombs and Thrush were two of the most popular brands. This was in the early sixties and they may have been around in the late 50s. Side exhaust pipes are more commonly called "Lake Pipes". They were used so that the vehicle could be as low to the ground as possible for speed runs. These runs happened on dry lake beds like the Salt Lakes so they were called lake pipes.

I have a mod that, among other things, added the Atomic V8 Police Cruiser to the world space. Really nice looking car, no wonder the base version is found everywhere

I love the cars if fallout. The only problem I have with them is the amount of glass. I live in the south, I would cook under that much sun. Maybe tint the windows?

About the stick in the Cherry Bomb. One of the Firebird turbine powered cars (I forget which) had a joystick beside the driver's seat. You pushed it forward to acclerate, pulled back to brake and tilted it left/right for steering. So that's another design cue that Fallout 4 may have taken from those vehicles.

Always loved the retro-futuristic cars in these games. One historical note I will mention, is that some car companies were notorious for fudging or downright fabricating their performance numbers for sales (Jaguar XKE comes to mind, for one), so I wouldn't be surprised if the same is true for the Fallout setting

When it comes to the Highwayman, it seems like everyone goes on about '57-'58 Plymouth Belvederes, and Furys, and the iconic 1957 Chevy Bel-Air, but if you look at the in game sprite it is much closer to the 1958 Chysler Imperial. Everything from fin shape, headlight clusters, and bumper shapes line up.
  • @twistedyogert
Perhaps the Cherrybomb has anti-gravity technology and starts hovering once it gets going fast enough because I can't imagine ordinary tires holding up very well at such high speeds.
  • Love cars and retro futuristic cars are sick so I was excited to see to see this

Ever since i was a child i was a fan of the 50's designs of cars. Watching this again gives me great memories.

I'd argue the explosive nature of cars in Fallout is likely due to decades (more accurately, centuries) of lack of upkeep and repairs. I would assume that the fusion reactors become unstable as time goes on without mechanical maintenance or coolant replacement, because frankly if they did this prewar, a single pileup collision on an interstate could lead to a chain reaction that could wipe out an entire major city
