I think Annie's sleepwalking and trying to burn her children and also her talking about wanting a miscarriage were her attempting to prevent the events of the film, subconsciously.
  • I think King Paimon was forcing peter to become estranged from his mother. She claims that he always had a smirk on his face and he seemed to be kind of confused by this, but remember when Peter saw the reflection in his classroom? It had a smirk on, so what I think is that Paimon made it seem like Peter was always smirking at her in this way to drive them apart since she deliberately kept him away from Ellen aka the rest of the cult.

something kind of big that u missed: annie’s brother charles killed himself and blamed ellen for “trying to put demons inside” of him. ellen tried to cast paimon into charles, but he killed him self before she could. also, charlie is named after charles.

Some other creepy hidden things I noticed in this movie. The guy that smiles at Charlie is the same smiling guy that shows up in their house at the end of the movie. The woman who waves to Charlie at her school is also in the attic at the very end of the movie. When Peter is smoking his bong in the house he blows smoke out of the window. You can then see air blown back in the opposite direction, from a cult member who is watching him from outside. In one of the shots where you see Annie working on her miniatures you can see hands pressed up on the window in the background behind her from another cult member. When Annie yells at Peter for "That face on your face" she is referring to the creepy smile Peter sees himself making in his reflection in class. I loved all the spooky details they threw in this movie.

I think you are misinterpreting Annie’s sleepwalking. The reason Annie almost burns her children alive isn’t because she’s doing Paimons will. She’s subconsciously trying to save her child from his eventual fate as a vessel for Paimon. When she tries to pull off Peter’s head while sleepwalking she is again trying to kill him and stop the ritual from coming to fruition. Deep down there are some maternal instincts that are driving Annie’s actions while sleepwalking.

One thing I noticed was that when Joan first showed Annie the ritual with her “grandson”, the special item was his chalkboard, however, earlier when Annie saw Joan at the arts and crafts store, there was a new chalkboard in Joan’s trunk, indicating that the whole thing about her grandson is a lie and that Paimon even acted in on it to get Annie to believe and do the ritual herself

I think that the killing of the father was also a big part of this and the true beginning of the end: he most certainly seemed like he was a sort of protector of the family, with his calm, logical, detached demeanor, one might say angelic. It's no wonder that Annie finally gets possessed by Paimon while awake, only after her husband is killed. The fact that, unwillingly, she is the one who kills him, is the key.

Annies whole possession and ceiling climbing, chasing after Peter, cutting off her own head and floating body shenanigans is a fear i haven't felt from a movie in a long time. It was a slow burn of intensity that just exploded at the end. Reading all the comments and re-watching a few parts its very clear that Charlie clearly was Paimon all along but was in a female body so had to die and be reborn into Peter(male body) to become what he truly was meant to be.
  • When Peter was hanging out with that girl to smoke weed in that room the two students on the laptop were watching a video of old footage of guillotines cutting off heads...
  • @laziestslacker
That the "Charlie Statue" at the end is holding a staff with a hand bent at a 90 degree angle and pointing was the same position of Peter's arm/hand in the classroom possession scene.

Found a few more. After watching it again. When the camera zooms in on the desk in Charlie's classroom, there's rust or grime on the side right below the scissors. If you look closely, it's an outline of the Grandmother's face. As Annie recounts her Mother's trauma in the first support group, the necklace of the woman seated next to her repeatedly flashes. Her expressions change as Annie verbally bashes her Mom. The camera then focuses on an empty chair. The woman is later revealed as a cult member. She likely told Joan to begin going to the group in order for them to meet. Peter's teacher and others. (Possibly Charlie's as well), are all cult members. One of his buds Aaron is a member, too. The party where Charlie ate the cake was hosted at his house, Later, when Peter smokes with Aaron and a few friends after class, Aaron asks if any of them are friends with Becky on Facebook. Becky "could" be the one who chopped up the nuts that were in the cake. In that same scene, the bong Peter uses briefly flickers, showing the herbs inside. The same herbs Charlie is fed in her bottle by her Grandmother (as seen on the refrigerator photo). Annie also drinks it when she has tea at Joan's apartment.
  • @deadsailorian
She also says that her brother hanged himself in their mom's room because he thought she was trying to put people in him.
  • @scarlett1273
Peter is seen doing weed throughout the movie and weed is also called Devil's Lettuce😎 i thank myself for this useless imput
  • @Selena-gz9ts
The blue light started when Charlie was still alive. You see it in her room when she is crafting
  • The cult followers are definitely the people that show up naked around the house. The blond guy that smiles at Charlie at the funeral is the same guy in the doorway that Peter sees before running up to the attic at the end. I remembered the super creepy smile... This movie hit me hard and I think a big factor was the people hiding in the shadows throughout.
  • @chrissingh1181
I interviewed Ari at SXSW. The Miniatures are included as a metaphor for how little control the family have over the events that are happening.
  • @minkdevil
Anyone see the poor dead dog in the grass at the end :(
  • @Illmakeyou
I also like to think the girl who’s chopping up the nuts at the party is being worked by Paimon as well. The way she violently and forcefully chops it up is similar to the way the mom repeatedly knocks her head on the attic door.
