AJ+ wanted to explore the stereotype that the South is more racist than the North. So we hit the road in South Carolina and asked. Why now? The Charleston church shooting and the recent focus on the Confederate flag have reignited age-old debates about racism in the U.S., particularly in the South.

  • I mean the fact that he referred to black people as “negroes” tells you all you need to know.

Just here to remind y’all that South Carolina didn’t legalize interracial marriage until 1998.

"I'm not racist I just don't want all the blacks and Mexicans here! Stop making things about race!" We've clearly come so far 8 years later lol

Anyone from any culture and race can be racist. I'm an American of Mexican ethnicity. When I was 9 years old I got my first taste of racism. In 1964 I won 1st place in the library's reading contest where I had to write an essay on each book I read. I got my picture taken for the newspaper, but only of my back, they had me facing the librarian behind me, while the two White boys, who won second and third places, faced the camera. When I was managing an apartment building a Black couple came to my office mad as hell. They let me know that they knew I was Mexican and knew that once one Mexican moves in a whole lot of Mexicans follow. We are like roaches the lady told me. Since I was the manager I had to take that abuse. Of course, if someone would have said that to the nice Black couple, they would have screamed racism and sued. I know both White, Black and Mexicans who are racist against others. I've known people from all those groups who were racist and prejudiced against White, Blacks, Jews, Asians, Mexicans, Indians, Middle Eastern and anyone not included in this list. And I know those who deny racism are the ones who practice racism and prejudice against others. Because admitting racism means you acknowledge the issue, that it's unfair, abusive and one will need to change their own attitude against people they only know and judge superficially and not soul deep.
  • “The south ain’t racist, nah” - genuinely said by a man wearing a Confederate flag
  • @Blackboigabe

  • As a white man who's never visited the Carolinas I can say I have never experienced racism in Charleston.

I'm half black and took a vacation with my mom and aunt to Kentucky. I was a little nervous about it because I thought I'd get some dirty looks from people but I had the opposite experience. The people I've met were so nice and kind to me.
  • Reporter: “Sorry say that again?” White dude: “Segregation...everybody got along good” Reporter: 👁👄👁

“I’m not racist, my brother’s girlfriend’s moms boyfriend’s ex is black.”
  • "he needs to be a president and run this country, not be involved with these types of issues" ... idk about you but to me that sounded dumb asfk
  • I don’t understand why someone would hate another person just because they are a different race and/or come from a different culture. Instead of fearing what’s different people should take the time to learn about one another. Humanity is so diverse and there is beauty in diversity
  • If you wanna know if Jurassic Park is dangerous, you don't ask the dinosaurs.
