Trains at Watergardens (ft Steamrail A2 986 & the Tait) - Metro Trains Melbourne

Published 2024-08-08
In this video we visit Watergardens, a busy station on the Sunbury Line in Melbourne's north west situated on the border of the suburbs of Sydneham and Taylors Lakes. Here we see some trains filmed on a Sunday afternoon where we see the usual variety of Metro Comeng and Siemens trains. In-between clips we also take a quick interior tour of a Siemens train. We also see some V/Line Vlocity trains on Bendigo Line services passing through.

However on this particular day Steamrail Victoria were operating heritage train shuttles between Watergardens and Sunbury with steam locomotive A2 986 & the Tait EMU. We see the train arrive and depart Watergardens a couple of times on shuttle trips towards Sunbury, before seeing it depart towards Melbourne at the end of the day towards the end of the video.

Watergardens station opened on the 26th January 2002 as part of the Sydenham electrification project, which extended electrification along the line from the previous terminus at St Albans. It was built as a modern replacement for the original Sydenham station which opened on the 1st March 1859 as Keilor Road, before being renamed Sydenham in 1887. The new station was originally intended to be named Sydenham but prior to opening the naming rights were sold to the adjacent Watergardens Shopping Centre. Despite the name change the line was referred to as the Sydenham Line in official timetables.

Watergardens remained the terminus of electrified suburban services until the 18th November 2012 when electrification was extended to the current terminus at Sunbury. Despite this Watergardens still serves as the intermediate terminus of the line with many peak hour services as well as around half of off-peak and weekend services originating & terminating here. The station received an accessibility upgrade in 2021 which saw three additional lifts installed at the station; one at each entrance and one on platforms 2 & 3.

It's good to see they still kept the original Sydenham station.

Seeing that rail enthusiasts all around Australia and the world were unable to see Sydney Metro trains at Sydenham this week I thought I'd put together this video so we can all at least see Melbourne Metro trains at a station that was supposed to be called Sydenham. It's the next best thing :P I was planning on uploading this video as a premiere for you all but I'm rather pressed for time right now. Enjoy!

Can you film some trains at the new Parkdale Station?
