Olympic Summer Games: Atlanta 1996 (SNES) Playthrough

Published 2024-07-25
A playthrough of Black Pearl's 1996 license-based sports games for the Super Nintendo, Olympic Summer Games.

This video shows the full Olympics mode played on the medium difficulty level.

Olympic Summer Games, the official game of the 1996 Atlanta games, is the sequel to Tiertex's Olympic Gold: Barcelona '92 for the Sega Genesis (   • Olympic Gold: Barcelona '92 (Genesis)...  ), Master System, and Game Gear.

The cartridge-based versions of Olympic Summer Games for the SNES, Genesis, and Game Boy feature the same line-up of events as the fancy 3D Playstation and 3DO versions. There are ten in total: four of them - the 100m dash, hurdles, pole vault, and archery - make a return from Barcelona '92, while the other six - the high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus throw, javelin throw, and skeet shooting - are new for the sequel.

But despite being four years newer, it would be difficult to argue that the Atlanta game improved on any aspect of Barcelona '92. The gameplay has been simplified, there's less variety in the events, and the presentation is far weaker. The colors are flat, the animation is awkward, the stadium feels lifeless, all the nice UI flourishes and cutscenes have been stripped out, and there are hardly any sound effects. It's all very sterile and lacks any personality or excitement. It's dead boring.

Coming off such a promising start with Barcelona '92, Tiertex disappointed with this one.

  • When a sequel comes out four years later and manages to be worse than the original game in every single way... thanks, Tiertex!
  • I do like what they did for the intro with the color change throughout the years.

Olympic Gold: Barcelona ‘92, Olympic Winter Games: Lillehammer ‘94 and Olympic Summer Games: Atlanta 1996 were all developed by since-defunct Tiertex Design Studios, with the difference being that U.S. Gold published the first two Olympic video games and THQ’s Black Pearl Software division published this version for the SNES and Sega Genesis, and John Hancock composed the first two Olympic video games whilst Mark Ortiz did the same for this version.

Oh, wow! I had no idea there was an SNES version. There's a copy of the Game Boy version lying around somewhere at my parents' house. I was never any good at it lol

Yeah, this looks really underwhelming in just about every aspect. And you gotta love how the stadium is just a ghost town. Just the competitors and maybe 3 other people in the background.

Not exactly licensed by the IOC, but if you want a hidden-gem Olympics style game, I would recommend Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Games on the GBA. While the game play is mostly just button pushing at the right moment, it's actually done pretty well and worth looking into.
