π¨π± In this Chile documentary we first look at the history of Chile, from the early days of the Spanish Conquest and Colonial period of Chile, to Chile's war of Independence. Following Chilean Independence, we then examine Chile in the 1800s including the expansion into the southlands of the Mapuche and then the War of the Pacific against Peru and Bolivia. The 20th Century saw general stability and prosperity until the 1960s and 70s when the socialist Salvador Allende was elected president, but crashed the economy leading to intervention from the USA in the form of a coup in 1973 by General Augusto Pinochet. While Pinochet restored and then boomed the economy, his junta committed thousands of human rights violations against his own people.
π¨π± From 1990 Chile has had democratically elected governments, and its economy is the strongest in Latin America, with its mines producing the largest amount of copper in the world, and its state mandated private pension scheme being the first of its kind and most successful globally. It successfully exports a variety of foodstuffs, including Chilean fine wines, Chilean fruit and Chilean Sea Bass.
π¨π± Chile's geography is defined by its extreme length compared to its width, the product of being sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Andes mountains. Lying on a long tectonic plate boundary, Chile experiences the most violent earthquakes in the world. Traversing 40 degrees of latitude, it is home to a diverse set of climate zones and biomes, from the driest of all deserts in the north, the Atacama, through Mediterranean scrub, the Oceanic Valdivian temperate rainforests, and tundra in the south in Tierra del Fuego, Torres del Paine National Park and Cape Horn, the southernmost part of the continent.
π¨π± The capital and largest city is Santiago de Chile, with the historic port of Valparaiso being the second largest, and Concepcion the third.

Chile is such an underrated country to travel. So many majestic scenes, from the Andes Mountains, to south with lush valleys and to the tip near the Antarctica. Moreover, I absolutely loved the people there, never met such genuine, unassuming people. I've traveled a lot and it is one of my top destinations.

As a helicopter pilot, I lived and worked in Chile for about seven months, mostly in the Rio Puelo valley, inland from Puerto Montt. OMG! What an absolutely stunning country! And what fantastic people!

I visited this beautiful country and its wonderful people twice in the 90s. Its in my bucket list to visit Vina del Mar, Valparaiso and Santiago again, also to drink their pisco sour. I am 70yrs old and I hope to be there when I am 71. Greetings from Malaysia

I keep checking on Chile, because the only person from Chile i ever met was truly friendly and kind. Not the fake kindness so commonly encountered among united statians that wanes after the first meeting but real simple kindness that stayed the same for years and it had no hidden agenda. I count the people who impressed me in my life on just one hand. A Chilean is one of them. There is zero united statian in that list.

I had my Chilean friends as house guests for four months while they finished up their advanced degrees and became more interested in this country. Plus, Chile has a lot of physical similarity to my home state, California: a similar geometry, a Mediterranean climate in much of the country, and a coastal mountain range and a much higher mountain range separated by a long, fertile valley, etc. They also share a native American and Spanish colonial past and a history of mining and European immigration. I would love to see this beautiful, interesting country someday and as much of the rest of South America as I can manage. (I canβt endure the tropical heat and humidity of the northern regions for very long). Chile certainly is a land of extremes and biodiversity, like California is, with everything one could want in one place.

I love my country, even though right now we are not going through our best time i have no doubt that our people will overcome this rough times we are having (specially for my generation since our whole lifespan has been one of quite a notorious progresion for the country) and make Chile a better place to live or stay in the future.
