When you asked about how you're meant to sprint, I think what you could have done to sprint was to push forward for a fraction of a second, then on the second push right after that you hold it in the direction you want to sprint at, much like you would do with the W key on a keyboard and then using the ASD keys to steer. Bit of helpful advice here!
