Join Pye Jirsa, renowned photographer and educator, in our latest YouTube video as he masterfully demonstrates the art of turning day into night using flash photography, all through the lens of MagMod’s innovative tools.

This tutorial is a must-watch for photographers eager to expand their creative horizons.

Starting with the "Before" shot in natural daylight, Pye sets the stage for a dramatic transformation. By thoughtfully choosing the composition, whether landscape or portrait, and using elements like the arches in our scene, he emphasizes the importance of strong compositional elements in creating impactful images.

Pye then dives into the nuances of manipulating ambient exposure to achieve a convincing night scene.

The key here? Lowering the ISO and ramping up the shutter speed. With settings like 1/2000, f/2, ISO 50, and a cooler white balance, he skillfully turns the daylight scene into a moonlit night.

One key to pulling this off is to have a powerful flash that is able to push plenty of light on your subject. In this case, Pye uses the Profoto B10 which has 500w power.

But the real magic happens with the addition and modification of light. Pye demonstrates the power of MagMod's flash modifiers, particularly the CTO Dome Gel, to warm up the subjects’ skin tones, contrasting beautifully with the cool, night-time background.

The use of a MagGrid 40 further refines the light direction, adding depth and drama to the scene.Pye's mastery of light and shadow, combined with MagMod's versatile tools, culminates in a series of stunning shots that brilliantly capture the essence of night, all shot in broad daylight.

This tutorial isn't just about learning new techniques; it's about pushing the boundaries of what's possible with flash photography.

Wow. I have only just begun to play around with a flash in my photography journey. Seeing what can be done using additional light is a game changer. Thanks Pye
  • Well done ... love the fact that you take the CAMP concept into every session
  • Great content Tony, fyi - the magmod system will work fine on the Godox AD200 with the standard fresnel lens. A little hard on the fingers to make it fit...but it will fit and work well.
