Please join me in welcoming Dr. Dimitris Tsoukalas. There’s a chronic condition that’s more prevalent than cardiovascular disease and cancer combined. Autoimmune disease is the most common chronic illness, with over 50 million people suffering from autoimmune conditions in the US.

Autoimmune disease is a condition where the immune system does not recognize certain organs and tissues, so it attacks them. Hashimoto’s is the most common autoimmune disease.

Dr. Tsoukala explains that Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a chronic inflammatory condition in which the immune system attacks and gradually destroys the thyroid gland. This reduces the thyroid's function, leading to hypothyroidism.

Around 26 million people in the United States are suffering from Hashimoto's disease—and 9 out of 10 are women.

One of the first symptoms of Hashimoto’s is low energy. This is because the hormones produced by the thyroid gland regulate metabolism and control the metabolic rate. People with Hashimoto’s also have difficulty regulating body weight because their metabolic rate is slow. Hormonal imbalance and emotional instability are other common symptoms of Hashimoto’s.

All of Dr. Tsoukalas’ patients diagnosed with Hashimoto’s also have vitamin D deficiencies. More than 90% of his Hashimoto’s patients are insulin resistant. Another common problem associated with Hashimoto’s is multiple marginal micronutrient deficiencies. These deficiencies lead to mitochondrial dysfunction.

Dr. Tsoukalas takes a unique and groundbreaking approach with his patients and utilizes metabolomic testing, which tests chemical reactions in the body to help determine any deficiencies.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism in 2007. Docs put me on meds and I improved, but I hated being told I would have to take the meds for the rest of my life. I started a Keto, gluten free diet 3 years ago, and was able to get rid of the Hashimoto's. Now Im doing high doses of Vit D3 with Vit K2 to get off my meds. I am down to taking my thyroid meds 2x/week now. My doctor is impressed and my labs confirm im on the rigjt track!
  • As a Greek who's been following Dr Tsoukalas for years, I'm excited to see him featured here :) Thanks to both of you!

The hardest part is getting this diagnosed. Most Dr's don't do complete blood panels on this and just call it good. I'm pretty sure I've had hypothyroidism for years! The best thing I can do is educate myself and tell my Dr which blood samples I want pulled. Going to try that at my next Dr's appointment.

I have Hashimoto’s and have been taking levothyroxine for 25 years. 2 years ago, I decided to try keto combined with OMAD to lose weight and that worked out fantastic. I also notice many other positive results in all areas of my health. I was taking blood pressure, cholesterol lowering, you know all the standard US RX that most everyone is on today. I noticed improvements in BP, triglycerides, liver function, inflammation markers went from very high to the lowest on the scale, the list goes on. Against my Dr advice I decided to take my health into my own hands, and I stopped taking all my meds. Today a bit over 2 years my blood pressure is under 120/80 and I eat as much salt as I like. My T3, Free T4, and total T4 are all borderline normal (at the bottom of the scale but moving up) and my TSH is as expected very high (but heading down). Over the past 2 years all 4 markers are moving in the correct direction slowly. So 2 years of labs shows that my thyroid is on the recovery path. My Dr now seeing this says he no longer thinks I need to take levothyroxine he says let’s continue to monitor since this is going in the right direction. Hearing that it can take 7 years for the thyroid to recover seems like I have about 5 more years to go. But I have found that if you get your diet in check all the health related markers seem to fall in place on their own.

Thank you for this! It took years to get my hashimoto's diagnosis. It has then taken more years to get appropriate treatment. For being so common you would think the medical field would be more educated!

This doctor needs to be cloned and put into every medical school to re-educate doctors with correct information about health. He is brilliant, and a gem of a person to anyone with common sense about how to improve their health in a sustained way. I just love learning from his simple to understand videos.. I respect this man immensely. 👍👍👍

It’s nice to hear some people can get help. I have it and I couldn’t get a doctor who cared. So I have to try to help myself. I don’t want to pay another doctor to hurt me and mistreat me. What a blessing to hear people care. Thank you for sharing 😊

01:08 📊 Autoimmune diseases, affecting 50 million Americans, are the leading cause of chronic conditions, surpassing cancer and cardiovascular diseases combined. 02:15 🩺 Hashimoto's disease stands out as the most prevalent autoimmune condition, primarily affecting the thyroid. 04:32 🔄 Hashimoto's disease is not merely a thyroid disorder but an immune system malfunction where antibodies attack the thyroid gland, leading to chronic inflammation and potential destruction. 05:27 🚺 Hormonal fluctuations in women's lives, such as during menstruation and pregnancy, contribute to the higher prevalence of Hashimoto's disease among females. 08:37 🛑 While Hashimoto's disease can be managed to halt the immune system's attack on the thyroid, reversing tissue damage or discontinuing medication entirely is challenging due to slow thyroid tissue regeneration. 11:27 ⚡ Symptoms of Hashimoto's disease include low energy levels, difficulty regulating body weight, hormonal imbalances, and emotional instability. 16:51 🧪 Vitamin D deficiency, insulin resistance, and micronutrient deficiencies are commonly associated with Hashimoto's disease, underscoring the importance of comprehensive nutritional assessment. 21:12 🧬 Metabolomics offers a personalized approach to assessing nutrient utilization and identifying subtle deficiencies that traditional blood tests may miss, aiding in tailored treatment plans for Hashimoto's pa

Dr. Berg, can you please do a video on what food and supplements or actions a person suffering from this should do and take, on top of doing the metabolic test. Thank you
  • Last year I got really depressed, I had no energy and couldn’t stay awake I was randomly falling asleep, I’m also very overweight. I got really scared and went to the doctor. They diagnosed me with hypothyroidism and put me on medication. Now I’ve lost 50 pounds since January and I feel like a different person.
  • Dr.Berg, your continued dedication to educating us on the functions of our cells is so very appreciated... You make it easy to understand the most complex interactions in our bodies...Thank you for all you do!!!
  • I thought I listened to every videos about Hashimoto but this one is so informational and clear! Thank you
  • I cured my Hashimoto's on a high fat carnivore gluten free diet. I have years of gluten damage so I do still need thyroid medication, but feel so much better.
  • @J3335

Thank you so much Dr. Berg and Dr. Tsoukalas..❤ Was diagnosed with Hashimoto 20 years ago. But my former family doctor said once...you look pretty good, you couldn't be that sick..😅😢 Then I changed my family doctor and was sent to an Internist, who was specialized in gland diseases. Thank God and for her, after I showed her up all of my collected symptoms for more than 10 years, a lot of blood tests, one ultrasound and thyroid scintigraphy, this wonderful doctor lady diagnosed me with this Hashimoto disease. I am so thankful for finding such a good Doc. Love ♥️ and Light 🕯Dearest greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 Sabine..⚘️🌾🌷

Excellent interview and information. Thank you for bringing more attention to this disease. So many people are unaware it's causing their symptoms, and are unaware there is much that can be done to support it.
