Funk Rock Bass & Drum Grooves with Jack Irons

Published 2024-05-15
Front to back take of my song “Lobster for Breakfast” with Jack Irons (RHCP/Pearl Jam) on drums!
Jack first recorded his drums on my bass, then I recorded this new take on it. We’re playing on feel without using click track, it’s a fun challenge to nail these in a single take. It’s all about locking in and riding the waves, groove glue!

I’m playing my Cortex Bass with Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings and used a Boss OC-2 Octaver, a Seamoon FX Grind Machine overdrive, a Darkglass Hyper Luminal compressor and a Rodenberg 707b clean booster. Recorded with the DI of my Eich T-1000 amp without plugins or post-processing, I’m stepping the pedals real-time. I mixed our takes together in Cubase and mastered it with Ozone.
Jack plays his custom Masters of Maple drums, Zildjian cymbals, Evans and Remo drumheads, and Vic Firth sticks. He recorded his drum take in Luna using Apollo interfaces and engineered and mixed it himself. Just in case you’re not fully familiar, Jack is the founding drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, he left the band after The Uplift Mofo Party Plan tour, you might also know him from Pearl Jam’s Yield and No Code, Eleven, Neil Young, Spinnerette, or his solo work. Our paths crossed while recording songs for The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown in Hollywood, we recorded the song “Bananas” which was released this year on vinyl. If you’re into vinyl and like our music; we’re playing on the 7” release of “Trill Seekers/Bananas”, pressed on funky purple splatter vinyl. It comes in a gatefold with stellar artwork, stickers and more, check it out here: bit.ly/TrillSeekersBananas We’ve recently recorded “White Orchid” together in the studio and can’t wait to share it with you guys.
Check the original “Lobster for Breakfast” recording here:    • Funk Rock StingRay Bass Grooves   We used the isolated bass take of that performance for Jack’s shoot, so we have another split screen as well. Besides working on new material like our last video    • Heavy Fretless Rock Bass with Jack Ir...   we’ve been having fun recording some Groove Lab songs, Jack’s an ultimate fit for these grooves and really brings the compositions to life. Watching your right hand / finger technique makes me wonder how many days of hand cramps and pain you endured to get to this point. Awesome playing
