Indiana mom Ashley Summers died recently when she apparently overwhelmed her body by drinking too much water. It was a hot summer afternoon, and Ashley told her family she felt dehydrated. She grabbed several bottles of water, and chugged them down – approximately 64 ounces in 20 minutes. By the time she got home, she started to feel ill. Now, Ashley’s brother is speaking out about the dangers of water intoxication. Ann Mercogliano has more.

This reminds me of one specific thing my chemistry teacher in high school told us: “too much of anything is dangerous” RIP to this woman.

Death by water is always a shocking thing to hear. Jacqueline Henson, a 40 year old from Huddersfield here in the UK died after drinking two two-litre bottles of water in under two hours whilst trying to lose weight in 2008. Everything in moderation.
  • Our kidneys can only remove 1 liter of water per hour, which is 33 ounces. She drank 64 ounces in 20 minutes.

I almost died from this as well. They tell us to stay hydrated by drinking water but what they've failed to tell us is that we also need sodium, potassium and magnesium (electrolytes). While drinking water to stay hydrated and sweating in the heat, we lose these. I now put sodium and potassium in my bottled water on a daily basis.
  • A nurse friend who went to Haiti to assist in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake was drinking a lot of water to stay hydrated in the intense heat. She started feeling sick and realized that with all the sweating and drinking plain water she was losing vital minerals. She started drinking Pedialyte or a similar product and was able to continue with her life-saving work for the people of Haiti.

Make sure not to drink too much water too fast. Heat might also play a factor. When my grandmother was young, she was out in the sun for too long and developed heat stroke. She stayed inside for a couple days and recovered. Thank goodness she’s alive and well.

its crazy how you see people chug a 6 pack a beer in less than an hour but chugging 6 bottles of water in an hour is fatal.

It is probably safer to drink five bottles of beer quickly than five bottles of water, your body just vomits the beer out, but the water is held in the system, imagine that!

it’s crazy how many people don’t know that it can be dangerous to drink too much water in a short period of time

She was my mom's best friend. Prayers for her family ❤

People don’t realize that you get water/liquid from other thing like food, coffee, juices, etc… on top of the regular water you drink.

It’s so surprising how just 4 bottles of water can change so much in the span of hours. ❤ Condolences to all families.
  • It's kind of scary of knowing that your body needs water to stay hydrated but still having to be careful of how much water your body actually needs. I'm glad to know this. So sorry this happened to her.

What doesn't make sense is it wasn't that large an amount of water... obviously she had some health condition but the media will just omit that to make the story more click worthy
  • @TiktokTownhall
That’s so unfortunate, you’d think our bodies would force us to vomit

This is really scary. Growing up, I was told not to drink too fast coming home from the heat. Instead, eat watermelon slices. They not only cool you down, but also slow you down.

I used to work at a bakery that had no AC, i ince drank a lot of water at once because it was so hot, my stomach hurt but i was so hot, and i knew about water poisoning, and looking at this i know how she felt and why she did it. To anyone who is too hot and cannot cool down with water please get indoors or pour the water on you.
