I don't get what the problem is. He has the clause and the choice. He doesn't even need a good reason why he doesn't want to go to a team that is on his list. You can be mad at the team because they signed the deal. But not at the player.
  • Players should always do what's best for themselves, even if it could be considered "selfish", because teams are always going to do what's best for themselves too. Look at how Vegas let Marchessault walk or how Tampa let Stamkos walk. This is a business and everyone should be looking out for themselves.
  • I agree he has the right to use the NTC the team signed. Wife in mind or not. I dont like the threat to not report if he is traded to a team not on the list. If NY has to honor their side you need to honor yours. That becomes selfish. Should have had a full NMC signed then.

not wanting to damage your wife’s career isn’t selfish at all, it takes so many years in med school and doing residency and bro doesn’t want to mess up her career she’s worked hard for.

I 100% don't like Trouba as a player but the dude negotiated his contract with his wife and family as a primary concern. As much as i like to hate on him, not a single ounce of blame should fall on him and good for him for making his wife's career a priority too. He might be a shit head on the ice, but any player or man that puts his family first should not be faulted for it.

This reminds me of the Krug situation in St Louis. 😢
  • Detroit dodged a bullet. What else does Stevie have up his sleeve? This ain’t it.

Saying no to a team on the no trade list is cool. Saying I will not report to any team I am traded to on the other hand, if true is a whole other issue!
  • @AAbram-yt9de
So many bad contracts for defensemen in the last 10 years. Trouba, Nurse, Jones, Faulk.
  • For Detroit(and the other 14 team),it's his right. BUT... IF rumour are true and he refuse to go to the other 16 team, this should be ground of contract termination.
  • @wolfxp2
This contract was never good Fans, trouba, rangers brass, media have handled this poorly Brass should’ve never signed the deal and can’t deal him to Detroit that’s trouba’s right Fans have been shitting on trouba’s wife and that’s awful Larry brooks for even bringing up her and her residency is just ridiculous Trouba should not be telling teams that the rangers can trade him he won’t report that’s just not how nhl transitions work and that is selfish imo bc if trouba has right to decline a trade to 15 teams Drury has a right to trade him to the other teams
  • I don’t blame Trouba, but being traded is the danger you inherit by wearing the Rangers C lol
  • @thehoss84
Breathing a sigh of relief, was not excited for trouba to Detroit
  • Jason Spezza threatened retirement so nobody would claim him off the leafs a few years ago, that's gotta be the most recent player refusing to report off waivers
  • @jeffreyc1971
Dr. Randy Gregg. Loved hearing his name come up and recall announcers calling him Doctor Randy Gregg in game back in the day!
  • @NickPoeschek
No issue with him refusing to waive a NTC, that’s his right based on his contract. I guess refusing to report if traded is also his choice if he wants to get suspended and forfeit his salary. However, I also don’t have a ton of sympathy for him or his wife because people who make far less money (military families, spouses of people fighting wildfires, etc) deal with being apart for stretches of time due to their work without nearly as many resources to get through it. Even if it’s not ideal, I’m sure Trouba would be able to hire a nanny and make it work for a couple of years.
  • Of all of the teams that would be on his no-trade list, I would not expect Detroit to be on that list because he is Michigan-born, so I understand why he wouldn't want to leave New York however, I figured Detroit would be the best case scenario.
  • @killhouse6130
Why anybody would trade for trouba without also getting a kings ransom in return from the rangers is beyond me
  • You omited the fact that Trouba is from Detroit . That is probably the rub here - the rangers where trying to make it more ammeniable to him , so he put Detroit on his no trade list . He has a lot of friends on the red wings
