2:32 Pan American Airlines Flight 4729 Pan American Airlines Flight 4729 was a flight operated by Pan Am on a 12 year old 747-100, and flew with Pan Am since 1980, the flight was planned to go from Great Anvil International Airport to North Shore International Airport carrying 233 passengers, the First Officer was 27 year old Samuel G, that flew with Pan Am since 1985, he has 6000 flight hours, with about 1500 of those in the 747-100, the captain was 42 year old Bill E. With 18000 flight hours, about 3000 of those in the 747-100. Boarding had started at 6AM on the 29th of February, 1988, the plane had started pushback at 6:30 AM and at 7AM, the plane lined up with runway 27 at 7AM and recieved takeoff clearance a minute later, the plane started rolling, down the runway, but when they tried pitching up, the plane didnt, and thats when the pilots realized they didnt put enought power, both pilots were new at operating in Great Anvil International Airport, and the runway lenght was very short (about 2850 meters) and the pilots needed to raise the throttle to 90% to actually take off in a safe lenght instead of 76% throttle, the plane ended up overruning the runway, causing a tailstrike that set the tail on fire, aswell as the landing gear getting destroyed and the cockpit being damaged due to being hit by rubble, the First Officer was slightly injured by the rubble, the pilots tried to get the plane airborne because there was a forest ahead, if that was succeful, the plane could go around and do a belly landing back at Great Anvil International Airport, luckily, they managed to get airborne just before hitting some trees, but just as they started turning, the ailerons got stuck, causing the plane to hit the forest, causing severe damage to the cockpit and for the front end of the plane to be partly disintegrated, aswell as the cockpit getting damaged Before the investigation: Emergency services arrived quickly, setting off the fire and rescuing the survivors, in total, 29 people ended up passing away in the crash, 19 from smoke inhalation and 10 from being crushed, 126 people were injured in the crash, 35 of them severely (including the pilots) the wreck was very damaged the back of the plane was skeletonized, and front was crushed. Investigation: the black box with the cockpit CVRs wasnt of much informations, since the pilots had told the investigators what happened during an interview, the black box recorder this: Start of recording: Captain Bill E: so passengers, we are taking off, be ready for a long flight GPWS: Whoop whoop! Whoop whoop! (shattering sounds, most likely the landing gear being destroyed) F/O Samuel G: we dont have enought power! Full throttle! Pull up! Pull up! (Shattering sounds, fire sounds most likely the second impact, the F/O is injured) Captain Bill E: we cant keep it up! Are you ready for the impact! GPWS: Whoop whoop! Whoop whoop! Terrain! Terrain! Pull up! Pull up! (Shattering sounds, last impact) The investigation had ended 2 weeks after the crash, the blame was put 80% on the pilots for not engaging the correct amount of throttle, 10% on Pan American Airlines, for accepting to operate 747's on an airport that was made to operate much smaller aircraft, 5% on the airport, for allowing 747s to go on the airport and 5% on a Goverment Agency for the same reason Bill E. was fired from his job but Samuel G. was allowed to stay, but quit just a few days after due to the guilt of causing the crash
