A 76-year-old pilot was on the first flight of a 10-hour break-in period after an engine overhaul. The preflight inspection showed no issues. About 35 minutes into the flight, oil covered both windscreens, blocking visibility, and the engine lost partial power. Tower personnel reported smoke from the engine. The pilot landed in a field, but the airplane collided with a ditch and caught fire. The pilot escaped, but the wreckage was mostly consumed by fire.

Investigators found a large hole in the engine case near the No. 2 cylinder, with a fractured connecting rod likely due to oil starvation. Extensive fire damage prevented determination of the oil leak source.

    I'm assuming Victor-Juliet-Golf was a Bell 206B JetRanger II, VH-VJG?

When was this crash? I live in Punta Gorda and was surprised when I heard the tower say Punta Gorda.

What is that plane in the cover photo? Kind of looked like something i seen at the NC Forrest service in some old photos from the 70s and 80s
