Butler is clearly choosing these women based on their needs - more than his. He's forgetful, and he's a very empathic individual. As per why the romances fail; he's hiding. and, not into starting a family. a failed parental upbringing that brought him sadness? - maybe, he didn't want to drag it out on another individual (son or daughter). there's something else, it's an emptiness, a repeating pattern, of almost subconscious-sabotage. like, not keeping in touch with newly-minted friends. it has to do, with not feeling like 'your enough' for their needs...and thus, yours. reciprocity is very high on his list of requirements - it's very fragile. cancelling oneself from consideration.. some-kind of 'disposable-mentality' ensconced. i don't know how this was programmed into Butler's psyche - but it's there, and quite real. i suppose, his mother moved from job to job, and friends came and went - as did the men she must have met. loneliness was common - drug use was high; as it was an anti-social-anxiety tool.
