Alexa with Home Assistant without Nabu Casa Subscription - it's free but it ain't easy

UPDATE: it worked a few days ago when I filmed this but apparently the line about base_url is no longer needed. Instead your duckdns url goes in “external url” like this:

www.home-assistant.io/blog/2020/05/20/release-110/…

If you have a smart home you need Alexa and Home Assistant. I generally recommend just getting the $5 subscription for Nabu Casa, but not everyone can or wants that method. Here's a great alternative.
All the instructions are given in detail on the Haaska Github Wiki.
github.com/mike-grant/haaska

config.yaml lines (that aren't already in the Wiki instructions):
http:
base_url: yourDomain.duckdns.org
ssl_certificate: /ssl/fullchain.pem
ssl_key: /ssl/privkey.pem

Paul Hibbert's "Ooh! The zigbee!" had me in stitches. Putting that in was a nice touch.

I followed a blog post and got this running a couple of years back, I wish I'd have had you guide. Well presented 👍

Thanks doc! Just finished up configuring HA with Shelly integration, Broadlink Integration and Alexa using your videos! Keep up the good work!

DrZzs as always you're the man. I'm working on moving from SmartThings to Home Assistant but still wanted to keep the SmartThings hub for Z-wave and Zigbee automation and didn't want to have a monthly fee for a service like Nabu Casa. It looks like this does the trick for both the Alexa integrations as well as the required SmartThings webhook. Thanks!

Great work guys. Had a small problem, take care pasting items from the wiki into the Authorisation URI and Access Token URI - make sure you don't add a leading tab. The system warned me but I was in tunnel vision mode. Removed the tabs and now I am working!!! Very pleased.

Thanks for another great guide and to all the folks that helped other people and helped me at the same time. Now I have my HA devices with alexa
  • This actually worked! The AWS interface is completely different now than when you made this video, but some digging around worked. Thank you!!

A couple of months ago, I thanked you for this video. So, tonight I decided it was about time to give it a whirl, after successfully porting my Monocle camera gateway onto a Synology NAS (apparently very difficult, but actually way easier than any of the other methods for running it on Docker on Ubuntu, which all failed...) So, buoyed by that success, I gave this a whirl. Aside from a couple of instances where the documentation doesn't quite match the reality any more, this worked a treat, first time. I got the green tick on the first test and I confess I stared at the screen for a full 30 seconds before my brain allowed me to punch the air in triumph! The Alexa discovery went through and said, "Erm, nope, didn't find anything." But then I noted there was some 140 new devices, so it clearly did find something. Aside from a few odd issues, like the Sonoff Dual not working with voice control (no great shakes, it needs Tasmotising anyway), it all seems to work pretty well. But it's only been half an hour. I think there's some work I need to do to tidy things up on my HA server to get this to be flawless, but overall it's been a pretty successful day.

Well that was a weekend project, but it works now! Thank you very much for making this video. Although there were a number of issues, your help saved me a great deal of time.

Great guide DrZzs for pointing the usual mistakes to make . And of course massive thanks for the guys creating Haaska for all of us. Works perfectly!
  • @lezgettdrunk
Great video! Followed some of the comments below and was able to get through the whole setup with one snag. Only thing I did different was use NGINX since I was having trouble the SSL.

Thank you so much for the videos! I haven't setup an Alexa skill yet, but your help with configuring DuckDNS invaluable. So far, my only major gripe with Home Assistant is stuff like this. I had DuckDNS installed and configured, but until your video, I didn't know I had to also edit the YAML file to include the new HTTP section.
  • @CamiloSperberg
Here I am shouting at the screen because everyone now knows how to get to your HA instance but it's not active, so well done. Oh the zigbee!! Ooooh the zigbee hahaah
  • @adyjoy
Excellent video - short and to the point, but including common errors (which is really useful), as well as a healthy dose of humour. Nice ☺
  • @willrnsantana
Thanks DrZzs. It works. The tutorial gotta be updated as some of the screens changed due to AWS constant updates, but it works
  • It is totally beyond me how someone figures something like this out. But it is a great thing that geniuses like that share it with (relative) dopes like me. Thanks !!!
  • @geektoolkit
OMG saying "Aleka" is both hilarious and brilliant! You always crack me up with your videos...I also loved the "I followed the steps...and was amazed when it worked". That seems to be the QOTD for so many things with home automation, esp. side projects :) Great walkthrough! (It also made me feel better about spending 5 bucks a month and saving all of these steps)
  • IT WORKED! Looks like my first comment never stuck? Well the only issue I had was the REGION selection since I am in N. California, I picked it, didn't work... started over and read direction.... If your language is English (US) or English (CA) in North America, then make sure you pick "US East (N. Virginia)" no matter where you live!! Now I'm off to do more work on adding devices, creating rooms/groups... I'm a neophyte trying to migrate off of Homeseer that I have used for years... Only problem with Alexa (Alisa as we call it when it shall not be named) is that you no longer need to install a Skill to get it to scan and see the Hue's hub and lights!!! That means I have double the entries in Alexa... Hrumph... Well Thank you for your videos... they are helping so much that I first search your channel for a solution.
  • @daramullally
It worked first time! Thanks for all the videos.
