Did Marlins Manager Skip Schumaker Throw Sixto Sanchez Under The Bus?

Published 2024-05-20
Brenden Schaeffer discusses comments by Marlins manager Skip Schumaker after Sixto Sanchez had another rough first inning that the Miami club was unable to overcome over the weekend.

A hit batter and wild pitch followed by multiple walks and hits put the Marlins in a bind that they weren't able to overcome against the Mets. Schumaker pulled no punches saying that what the club has been getting from Sanchez has been unacceptable.

Do we like a manager giving blunt criticism of a player on his team when it matches what fans and media can see and acknowledge with their own eyes? Is this similar or different to other instances of managers coming after their own players in recent years across MLB?

I love him for this. In the MLB, there are expectations.

OMG! A manager actually speaking his mind about a player! I just pray Sixto doesn't need counseling after this!

I don't think he said anything wrong or that he shouldn't have. This isn't the same thing as Oli calling out Tyler O'Neil's effort last year. It is however the same thing as when Oli kept having to answer the same type of questions about the Cardinals starting pitchers last year. I hear this and it just sounds like half the post games we heard last year lol
  • Sounds like the next Cards manager. Time to call out poor play from the players who aren’t performing.
  • @cramirez2112
Very hypocritical by some fans. Oli gets critized for doing the same thing.
  • I think its important that skip talked to him BEFORE he made those comments to the media. Stark contrast to the Oli and Oneill situation if we're comparing the two
  • I understand that injuries played a part to why sixto is staring but let be honest he a reliever and not a starter.
  • @brandonmcduff
Yet you guys in the comments hated oli marmols guts for doing the same thing

Hello real world, when my job performance is suffering my boss at work lets me know. Even millionaire sports players need to be called out too.
  • @stlcards11
Certainly better than Ron Washington's way.
  • @bakajon
He did say he had a talk with him. Then made the public comments after the game. So, what's the beef?
  • My issue with Oli v. O’Neill was Oli didn’t say it directly to O’Neil immediately after the play. He saved it for the media. If that’s wrong, I tip my hat to Oli. TLR would give it guys in media, but only after giving it to their face didn’t work. Don’t like the Phil Jackson approach of having an issue and going to the media first.

Publicly punching down is the sign of a weak person. It was unacceptable from Oli and skip.

I don’t want to say anything overly superficial… but I do have a feeling that folks like Skip more than Oli because Skip has a more attractive face. And literally that’s what makes people think he would be a better manager.

The managers need to keep their mouths shut
  • @kpm2851
If he is like that we sure don't need him here as manager
