Anterior Tibialis Tendonitis Causes, Symptoms, Treatment Options

Published 2018-11-09
ARE YOU EXPERIENCING ANTERIOR TIBIALIS TENDONITIS?
+ Deep achy pain on the inner front of the ankle?
+ Loss of motion at the ankle?
+ Ankle weakness?
+ Swelling on the inner front of the ankle?
+ Increased pain in your ankle with increased activity?

These symptoms can be a result of Anterior Tibialis Tendonitis. A condition not very well known, but one that can have lasting affects if not properly diagnosed and treated.

The muscle that runs down the front of your shin is called the Tibialis Anterior muscle. This muscle works together with your Anterior Tibial tendon, located on the inner-front of the ankle to help your foot flex upward. This muscle and tendon rely on one another for proper foot and ankle function. When the muscle and tendon stop working together because of overuse or a traumatic ankle injury, Anterior Tibialis Tendonitis may occur.

Just looked at your video and love the analysis. My only concern is that I’m able to walk fine , foot feels a bit weaker but I’m worried since I have something like a bony bump on that region of my foot . If you could give your opinion it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  • Can it also cause weakness? I just started on the spin bike which is something I started with some intensity that my body wasn’t used to. Wondering if that motion of pulling up on the pedals can cause that condition?
  • I have had pain in this area for about 2 years, especially when squatting specifically when my knee is over my toes. I tried exercising it away but the results have been poor. I suffer from flat feet and this may be a contributor, I have a large bunion. Any ideas?
  • I should mention having had back surgery done.....1987. I had compression fractures....L1L2L3....lower back....Harrington rods installed and removed 2yrs later....reason being....one rod broke whilst playing golf. So nerves being blocked can be reason for pain. But daily practice....hitting golf balls...and regular walking should be main reason. Only left tibialis anterior is causing problems. If I dont walk or practice....then pain is gone

My anterior tibialis tendon ruptured a day after a foot surgery where the doctor inserted a metal plate to stabilize the foot. Two weeks later I was back in surgery to reconnect the tendon to the bone. What is the long term outcome of a situation like this? Did the plate shear the tendon?

  • I think i have this condition but only in the left foot.. probably because i train for vertical jump now and my right leg is much stronger then my left foot,so i think i overtrained my left anterior tibialis tendon. The strange thing is i have had this condition before and yes it hurst when walking ,getting up stairs but when i warm it up and do my running workout it kind of fades away during my exercises then comes right back up when i finish em...im really confused.if someone can help me out
  • Hi can this also lead to numbness in ball of foot behind toes? Was hit with batted baseball directly where this is located. Swelling went down but now front sole numb when I wake up and longer walks - 2miles - front area , shin and ball off foot in pain and numb.

On my left foot my pain is on the smaller tendon right next to the Anterior tendon. I sprained my ankle there years ago. It started hurting again from too tight shoes. Can you please tell me what that tendon is called. Can't find info online! Please and thank you!
  • When ever I play soccer its always the only part that hurts for me what’s the best way to recover and yo keep it from hurting after practice?

I've got this. The last 3 runs have been progressive worse and even though I've now stopped running it still hurts. Going to try ice bucket for 6 minutes and NSAIDS. Not convinced about massages so will leave that out.
