Messing around with Pinephone Pro

Published 2022-10-14
Next day update: Mobian Phosh is very stable with regard to video output. The settings save and stay/don't mess up unlike Plasma Mobile. So that's what I'm going forward with at this time.

I'm still looking for a powered dock that works with the PPP at this time. Otherwise the PPP dies in about an hour when plugged in to an external monitor/keyboard/mouse without a charging USB-C dock.

I did an -Syyu update on a Manjaro/Plasma Mobile install I had on the eMMC and it got into a bad locked screen state. So I had to get a new OS on the eMMC again.

So I flash Arch/Phosh on the eMMC. I try to boot up the Pinephone Pro and something went wrong. Since the Mobian/Phosh SD card doesn't have it's own bootloader... my PPP would not start at all... even with the reset button trick. So I thought I bricked my PPP. I eventually flashed Manjaro/Phosh on the SD card and that allowed me to flash Manjaro Plasma onto the eMMC again. So now we're good.

Then I spend some time trying to install VS Code in Arch/pacman environment. Had to look up most of that I'm used to apt. Then screwing around with video out... which I think I have now. The settings don't seem to stick though. Will mess around with this more.

Without a powered dock, the battery on the PPP dies fast. The convergence dock from the original Pinephone is powered but it does not work with the PPP's video out.

Keyboard is BOYI 68 (gatteron yellow)
Durgod Hades 68 (offscreen - cherry red mx)

The unpowered dock I'm using is/was called FlePow 7-in-1 seems to have been unlisted on Amazon but the same design is under a different brand.

It seems like Plasma Mobile right now is the most reliable for HDMI out in my case. I tried Manjaro Phosh and I could not get display out to work. I have in the past... with Mobian Phosh but yeah.

  • If this is you messing around with a thought you are special sir. You only need an idea and the rest is making it better.
  • @esra_erimez
What did that Pinephone do to you that you installed snapd on that poor thing????
  • If we really want to see smartphone as laptop replacement, Android never has been the answer people are looking for. It's time we give attention to GNU Linux smartphones as they can easily run native desktop softwares, unlike Android.
