Let me be clear that I (having been an art teacher myself) completely understand the importance of the fundamentals of art. To be a well rounded artist things like color, perspective, anatomy, and art history are all beneficial in your art journey. All styles like cartoons, anime, realism, etc, take reference from real life. So learning the skills of fine art can definitely help you. I am speaking more from the perspective of why it's important for a teacher to not behave the way mine did.
I went to an art high school (much like a magnet school or something like that) where I had to audition for 3 hours, get interviewed and submit a portfolio to get in.
While I absolutely loved my school experience It also made me realize that I wasn't cut out for the fine art life.
But in my senior year I had to make a series of pieces that related to a thesis. I decided to make mine about Japanese culture and did some drawings and paintings about geisha. What resulted my my teachers cursing at me in front of her entire class and screaming that I was going to fail. It was one of the worst experiences I ever had in an art classroom. It made me not want to paint in her class ever again. It wasn't until I went to college that color started coming back.

  • Absolutely beautiful painting you drew. And your story was excellent. I’m 60 years old and I still remember and feel the impact of a couple teachers that were quite disrespectful and tough with the words they used. It’s great that you were mature enough to understand that you weren’t going to allow her to take away your passion for art. So glad you told your story.

Being an ART Teacher myself, your art teacher should be ashamed of herself. The role of the art teacher is to nurture talent and foster growth...
  • I hated her class. She never told me a positive thing ever, either. It was her way or the highway. I love your work.

Me: *messes up on paint* Also me: 👁👄👁 *throws painting across room* AAAAAAAAAAAA

I feel like if a teacher can’t love children, they shouldn’t teach. It seems like she only liked her art, so she could find a way to relate with those who use similar styles. If I ever become a teacher at some point, then I would appreciate each and every child that comes into my class, give them compliments on everything I could. Because I know how hard it is when you just aren’t confident in your art, and compliments on my work really helped me see the good parts in every piece I made.

I'd cry if I were in her class. I love my last art teacher She was tough but praised anyone who would actually try. She let me draw horses for every project I could lmao.

Those type of teachers should be ashamed by theirselves

I can’t believe that teacher had the audacity to do that. How do people like her get that job
  • I noticed that with all the schools I went too, all the teachers seemed to have a problem with me. I don't know why, I was a quiet and nice kid, and didn't cause any trouble. I was a little hyperactive sure, but I was eager to talk to people and sing and dance and have fun. They all yelled at me harshly for different reasons but I still kept positivity even though was a highly sensitive child. I did cry once in class. But one teacher just stuck with me, and it was in 6th grade. I don't know her first name but her last name was "Hicks" and she just seemed to have it out for me. She blamed me for things and didn't apologize, she yelled at me in front of everyone and made me feel ashamed for not understanding my math homework. All these experiences and the way people have treated me in the past have made me so anxious and hurt. I have counseling now and I'm doing much better being nice to myself but people should be more aware of how they treat kids. You could really mess up their confidence and belief in themselves. It's horrible :(
  • Sniff sniff I smell........ A VERY TALENTED UNDERATED ARTISTTTTT

Hearing you talk about the girl in the kimono painting is really sad. Bad art teachers are probably the worst kind of bad teachers since art is basically an outlet for people
  • @Bunnyburrowsys
Gosh, why is this making me want to cry- It's also reminding me of my 6th and 7th art teacher, Ms. Olaf, who was a huge inspiration for me. She told us that whatever art-style we like is great, always had faith in us, eta. She was one of the people who kept me going and told me what I did was good. She also taught me how to use a pottery wheel and stuff, which was a lot of fun and I'm looking into getting my own now.

She is a jerk! She should be ashamed of herself :c It's ok scomicmaker if u r sad I will always support u <3
  • What's up with art teachers and hating the anime/cartoon style??? So many people have been sharing stories on how they had that one art teacher that hated them because of their catoonish art style😔😑
  • @dusk4410
I had a discouraging art teacher too. Made me not want to draw for over a year! No where near as bad but definitely tore apart everything I tried. I’m happy you kept painting! Your work is amazing 😊
  • @dragonwolf1468
And worst thing is people say you need to respect your elders... tbh if my art techer did that to me I would talk back but I can't since"respect your elders",even if they're ruining your life
  • @NikpumpOff
What makes someone do this at the front at one ENTIRE CLASS, a teacher says: "That's bullsh*t!" to someone, this something that a teacher don't have to say, AND NEVER have to say. (Art teachers always says don't draw anime, but, so, why anime exist?)
  • Me at the start of the video: "She doesn't sound too bad" Me at the end of the video: "I f*cking hate this girl"
  • @dermenschnr5221
Btw: imagine being an art teacher and connecting to students so that someday you can say "he/she was one of my students".... even though you just connect to the ones that come with more skill in the first place and then, when there's actually someone that needs your teaching, you throw them away and thus failing at the only thing left for you after YOU failed to become a great artist... teaching
