Randy Newberg is at the Mystery Ranch HQ in Bozeman, Montana where he is talking back packs with the experts at "The Ranch." Mystery Ranch has been one of his partners for over a decade and for good reason - they make comfort and "load carriage" the focus of their pack designs.

Many often ask what is Randy's "Go To" pack. The answer is the Mystery Ranch Metcalf. As shown in this video, the Metcalf is extremely versatile and adaptable, covering your needs from short day hunts to multi-day backcountry hunts.

Love my Metcalf. Always buy local when possible

Great demonstration. The modular versatiliy of the "Load Bearing" frames gets overlooked when many are just looking at liters. I will be using the Pintler -(Daypack Lid & BIg Bops on the molle adds) and Terreframe 65 -(Big Bop adds) for14 days with 3 canisters each for "couples camera hunt". Packs and gear will make it If "we" do.

Randy, I look up to you for hunting advice and knowledge. You're pretty knowledgeable, for an accountant. I bought a Metcalf based on how much use and abuse I've seen you and your crew put these through. I'm looking forward to putting it through the pases for the rest of my life. Elk, deer, bear, and cougar will grace its fabric. Maybe goat, moose, and ram one day if I'm lucky. Thanks for what you and your crew do. Happy hunting.

Forgot to ask to ask if it has an insulated pouch for the Dilly Bars? LOL!! All kidding, they are an excellent pack.

Hey Randy Farmer here again from Arizona. Synchronicity is an amazing thing; I was going to ask you about this very topic - your pack! I knew it was a Mystery Ranch pack but didn't know it was the Metcalfe model. Great vid as usual, extremely informative. Great YT hunt channel ! Warmest Regards.
  • I was going to go for a MR sawtooth 45 as I mainly day hunt from a base location. The metcalf would let me haul in base camp kit and transition to day hunts with the one pack. 👍

Randy, I’m interested in seeing how your new Pop Up 28 does in the field. Hope y’all get lots of field testing and videos of it in action. Give us a review of it after season!

Just got my Metcalf from GoHunt after using your promo code. It is an awesome backpack and I can't wait to take it deer and bear hunting this year.
  • Question for you, which would be a more ideal/versatile pack set up to cover both light day hunts up to to 4-7 day backpack trips with meat hauling, and why: 1) Metcalf, or 2) Sawtooth 45 + Beartooth 80( bag only)
  • @MikeHunts
I have been using the REI Traverse 85 for the last 2 seasons. Its not made in the USA but it is half the price, lighter and has more volume.
  • Hi Randy, is the meat shelf expandable on the bottom? or just fit what can fit in between and sinch it down? I saw in a video a guy expands the sawtooth shelf to make the bottom longer if that makes sense
  • @Jimbowiejr
Own one, best I've ever owned and it will probably be passed down to my grand boys one day. Not yet though.

I'm looking at getting one of these. What size do you use Randy? Thank you!
  • Two things here Randy 1: I'd love to see a 4,5 bag dump 2: is this just a celebrity sponsorship bag or truly believe in the product. Exo,kifaru, kuiu all do the same or claim to. Not a bashing, just a ?. I am a follower(subscriber).
  • Does it at all disappoint you that Mystery Ranch production is/has moved overseas?
  • If you put meat in a game bag in the actual pack is there a way to protect it from getting bloody or do you live with the blood stains?
