Now that the topslide is fixed, let's make some cutting tools for the Celtic lathe.

  • Hey Michel, thank you for articulating your wonderfully pragmatic reasoning for not scraping your top slide. This is the kind of thinking we should all aspire to.

There is thinking outside the box, then there is thinking like Rusti, always a pleasure to learn. Thanks for sharing

Good times, thank you. A shaper is the one machine I'd love to own someday. Not because I need one, I just want to play with one...
  • As always good common sense approach to a daily problem. Well done and inspirational. Your ability to teach simply is wonderful.
  • "Damn, I have to do some thinking...... THAT wasn't in the plan." . I think I need a T shirt with that! :D Like the others I compliment you on your realistic approach to so many of these tasks.
  • Thanks for showing your two axis vice swivel adapter. A very useful device. I like your new tool holders Michel. The tilting mill table is so handy. Cheers Nobby

Rusti at the end of the day what you do is your business and if it works and you get a satisfactory result then that is good enough as you have proved many times, the average hobby machinist doesn't have the time or equipment to scrape surfaces but still manages to produce excellent work. I was trained as a machine tool fitter and was taught how to scrape surfaces and then spent the rest of my working life installing, repairing and servicing machine tools and can only remember only once scraping surfaces and that was when I was taught how to do. Modern machine tools are made using very precise machine tools which can grind very precise flat or round surfaces without scraping and and lubricants today have enough stiction to not need pockets to trap oil.

A delightful commentary on practical matters! I thought the shim was an ingenious solution to the problem. These tool holders are very nice indeed. Scrap metal turned into tools is always a win.
  • Love your discussion. . fantastic. . and I can't help but laugh at you 'touching' the lathe. . brilliant. . Have a great day.

Really great way to deal with the issue of setting the tool height on a 4 way tool post, bravo! Also, I am SO jealous of your deckel mill lol. Those things are so flippin nice, and so versatile. It makes easy work of that compound angle.

Another very interesting video Michel ๐Ÿ‘l really enjoyed watching every minute great explanation and analysis from start to finish.
  • really enjoy watching your methods, especially like how you show getting it done without ridiculous amounts of expensive tooling! top job!
  • G'day Rusti. That's a nice "beefy" tool holder you made there. Good work mate. Cheers, Aaron.

Hi Michael, I was one of the subscribers who questioned the gib adjusting screws through the side of the topslide body. At that point in time, I was not aware of the fact that the gib on your machine was tapered. Otherwise, my comment would have been unnecessary . What also threw me was the only single screw, which I took to be merely to hold the gib in place, not actually adjust it. I have a new mill, and all three axis gibs are tapered with a screw at each end to adjust and lock the gibs correctly. Your new lathe tools look to be able to do what you require. Setting the angles was a bit complicated, but fortunately, you can tilt the table on your mill. I was thinking of how I could make similar tooling on my mill if required, but the one angle would require the head to be angled instead of the bed in order to achieve the 7ยฐ tilt. I have a similar vice, so the rotational angle's not a problem. It will take some more thinking. I think. Thanks for your video. As allways very entertaining, thanks for sharing.
  • @jdmccorful
Nice work explaining and doing. Thanks for your time.
  • Hi Michelle, your wibbly wobbly clamp is such a great idea!! You reminded me of having to scrape a dovetail as part of an apprentice job. I still have those scrapers .... just as well .... I might have to put something useful at the bottom of my toolbox!! Mind you they do get used. Great finish from the shaper on those holders. And the test cuts looked really good as well!! Have a great weekend!!
  • @Peter_Nottle
function over form every day, fancy stuff is for selling, working stuff just needs to work ๐Ÿ‘
  • 200 of 1 Millimiter...... as my work Buddy would say:... "Who cares Millimiters... if theyre be important, they would be bigger....!" ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Nice weekend Michel !
