Can't Get It Out of My Head" is a song written by Jeff Lynne and originally recorded by Electric Light Orchestra (also known as ELO). First released on the band's fourth album 'Eldorado' in September 1974, the song is the second track on the album and follows "Eldorado Overture." The song was released in November the same year as a single.

The song became the band's first top 10 single in the United States, reaching number 9 and helped boost public awareness of the band in the U.S.; however, back in the UK the single and LP failed to chart. In 1978, it was included as the lead song on the four-track The ELO EP (UK release), reaching number 34 on the UK charts. The song has appeared on many ELO compilation albums.
The song reached #19 on the Dutch Top 40 chart on 15 March 1975

the website Jeff Lynne Song reports:
'There was a promo video for 'Can't Get It Out Of My Head' produced that features the band miming to the single version of the song. It starts off showing the exterior of an English building on Forshaw Heath Lane in Birmingham, then zooms into a small building beside the main building that is marked "Forshaw Heath Social Centre Hall" and fades to show the band playing in a very small room, as if the band is playing inside the building (although they may likely be on a sound stage). It's a very small, crowded room and there is no room for the band to move about. Each band member except Hugh McDowell is wearing a t-shirt with a logo for Avro's Toppop; Bev and Richard's are red while all the others' are yellow. Hugh, who had apparently just rejoined the band, is instead wearing a blue long sleeve shirt, but an Avro's Toppop sticker is clearly attached to his white cello and it gets several close-ups in the video. Avro's Toppop was a TV show from the Netherlands, modeled after the UK's Top Of The Pops, and presumably they were the sponsors of the video. Both Jeff and Kelly are wearing black shirts over their t-shirts, with Jeff's also having a print of large white wings across the chest and shoulders, which would make an appearance many more times in the following years. It's the first appearance of Mik Kaminski playing his famous blue violin and it's also the first appearance of a quite nervous looking Kelly Groucutt in the band.'

This historic Toppop recording was recorded in Forshaw Heath Social Centre Hall in Birmingham in February 1975. It was first broadcast by Toppop on 14 February 1975

What I'm really grateful for is YouTube. All of this wonderful music from back in the days most people on here cherish and wax nostalgic about is right here at our fingertips. At almost 78 years of age, my memory is still like a steel trap, and song titles will spontaneously pop into my head from the 60's, 70's and even into the 80's. I'll go to YouTube search, and there it is ready to play. How awesome is that?

Some of the most beautiful music written and performed by ELO. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius.

This is one of the few videos of Jeff without his trademark sun glasses 🙂 Jeff is the rock star who never acts like a star. He's humble and even admits to being a little shy. His personality adds to ELOs charm and magic

Where would music be if not for the contributions offered to us by Great Britain? My gosh… This American, is so grateful.

Back then musicians had real talent. Nowadays it's just about looks, being cool, glamour, fashion😢

ELO one of the best sounding bands of the 70s. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius! No other band sounded like them, what a joy to listen to. On their greatest hits album there are so many great songs it is hard to pick which one you want to listen to. The string instruments in these songs are simply awesome and will live on forever.

This song never fails to take me back to a simpler time. (for me anyway...) what a sweet, melancholy melody, and a typically beautiful Jeff Lynne/ELO arrangement. ❤
  • I was born in december 1979, lived in an orphanage from 1981 till december 1989 and was later adopted by a loving family. One day we were visiting a family´s friend and he played Discovery by ELO and once I started listening to the first tunes I inmediately had an inmense sense of peaceful nostalgy and happiness.
