These electrons then bump into nitrogen molecules (our atmosphere is ~78% nitrogen so it's everywhere 😂😂) these nitrogen molecules get excited and give off ultraviolet (nonvisible) light, but they do emit a small amount of visible light as well. But as you know, specifically wintergreen lifesavers give off a much greater amount of light and that's because of a compound called methyl salicylate which basically absorbs the ultraviolet light and reemits it as visible blue light 👍👍

This is due to triboluminescence, which is the emission of light resulting from something being smashed or torn. If you do this to a Wint-O-Green Life Saver, you can see a much greater amount of light (blue sparks!) due to the wintergreen flavoring or methyl this is how life savers spark.
